On Monday, President Donald Trump blasted Democrats once again for doing nothing to stop the illegal immigration problem on the U.S.-Mexico border.

But the president did praise one group for trying to do something: Mexico.

“Mexico is doing more for the United States now than Congress — specifically the Democrats,” Trump said at the White House. “We have a tremendous problem at the border.”

Trump made his comments while recognizing the winner of the Indy 500 race.

The president also addressed Mexico’s denials that there was a border compromise already in place after he ended his tariff threat.

“We have an agreement on something they will announce very soon,” Trump said. “It’s all done. It was all done because of the tariffs and the relationship with Mexico.”

The president made an announcement on Friday night that the tariffs would not be implemented due to both sides reaching an agreement.

“I am pleased to inform you,” he wrote in tweets on Friday night, “that the United States of America has reached a signed agreement with Mexico.”

As The Political Insider reported:

“The tariffs scheduled to be implemented by the U.S. on Monday, against Mexico, are hereby indefinitely suspended,” he continued.

“Mexico, in turn, has agreed to take strong measures to stem the tide of migration through Mexico, and to our southern border. This is being done to greatly reduce, or eliminate, illegal immigration coming from Mexico and into the United States.”

Trump’s tariff threats seem to be precisely that: threats. The president’s warning to Mexico that there could be economic penalties for refusing to do something about the illegal immigration problem seemed to be more about political leverage than placing taxes on that country’s imports.

And as of now, it seems to have worked.

The American people are tired of politics as usual and are looking for leaders who can get things done. Maybe Democrats should take cues from Trump instead of constantly fighting with him?
