Ocasio-Cortez Says Her ‘World Ending in 12 Years’ Comment Was Sarcasm, Blames GOP
Freshman Democrat lawmaker is increasingly distancing herself from her own remarks, as an opinion piece demonstrates
Back in January of this year, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) claimed the world would end in 12 years due to climate change.
Now she’s saying that was sarcasm — and that anyone who took her literally on that has the intelligence of a “sea sponge.”
AOC also lashed out at Republicans for mischaracterizing her simply to drive more social media clicks and higher TV ratings.
She has said many outlandish things — but calls her rhetoric “dry humor.”
Having a sense of humor is one thing, but being an elected lawmaker and serving in the House of Representatives and joking about policy is another.
When a person speaks from the House floor, people take that individual a lot more seriously than if he or she were caught, oh, saying these things in a bar.
Need an example? Former Vice President Al Gore gave the prediction of solar ice caps melting and death and destruction following it — but that never happened. He became rich from that and Americans started building underground shelters for the apocalypse.
AOC tweeted this out on Sunday: “Like the ‘world ending in 12 years’ thing, you’d have to have the social intelligence of a sea sponge to think it’s literal. But the GOP is Dwight from ‘The Office’ so who knows.”
This is a technique of the GOP, to take dry humor + sarcasm literally and “fact check” it.
Like the “world ending in 12 years” thing, you’d have to have the social intelligence of a sea sponge to think it’s literal.
But the GOP is basically Dwight from The Office so who knows. https://t.co/pmkwrdeAnq

So, when President Donald Trump jokes around at a press conference, he’s “literally” asking Russia to hack the illegal email server Hillary Clinton had already erased — but when AOC tells people the world is going to end in 12 years if we don’t address climate change, that’s “dry humor”?
Like most people, I love a great joke — but when I heard her say that, it didn’t sound like a joke to me. It sounded like the new warming cult narrative that is and was being passed around to alarm the Yardbirds. And by the way, most people don’t wait months to say “just kidding.”
That was the latest in a long line of failed deadlines to save the world.
She’s caught so much flak for it since she said it that she’s walking it back.
No one is laughing when a politician tries to “humor” the country into socialism. Ocasio-Cortez is the only politician in history who wanted to keep tens of thousands of jobs out of her district — and succeeded.
AOC is learning how to be a career politician in the Democrat Party, so she is backtracking. That’s all it is.
