Mark Cuban, in an interview with CNBC this week, declared that nobody in the current field of 2020 Democrat candidates facing President Donald Trump can win.

Was it a backhanded way to hint at his own 2020 run?

Cuban, the owner of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks, star of the hit show “Shark Tank,” and billionaire businessman, was asked his thoughts about who stood the best chance in a massive opposition field to take the White House back from Donald Trump.

“Nobody right now,” Cuban responded.

“Politicians are the least trusted of every profession,” Cuban added. “If you look at why people voted for Donald Trump, in my opinion, first and foremost it was because he wasn’t a politician.”

Adding the disclaimer of “right now” to his prediction, coupled with his assessment that only a non-politician can win, will certainly lead many to speculate that Cuban himself could run.

The enigmatic Cuban torched the current field of Democrats, which swelled to nearly two dozen candidates with the announcement that Montana Gov. Steve Bullock would be running. Mostly, he said — like the woman whose endorsement they’ll seek, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) — they aren’t making serious proposals.

He denounced the substance of their proposals as “headline porn,” adding, “I don’t think they believe what they’re proposing is passable.”

They don’t. They’re simply pandering to their anti-Trump base.

Will he run? Despite lamenting that the field is weak and unserious, Cuban still seems unsure if would run against Trump in his own independent campaign.

“We’ll see what happens. It would take the perfect storm for me to do it,” said Cuban. “There’s some things that could open the door, but I’m not projecting or predicting it right now.”

Cuban is often a critic of members of both political parties, though he’s taken some significant jabs at President Trump.

In September of 2016, he said he couldn’t “think of anybody more dangerous as president than Donald Trump” — then later predicted the economy would tank if Trump won. Trump fired back that “[Cuban’s] not smart enough to understand what we’re doing.”

Guess who wins that argument?

Cuban has also praised Trump, expressing some positive things about how the president has “changed the game” politically by giving “honest answers rather than prepared answers.”

In an exclusive interview with The Political Insider in 2016, Cuban said he didn’t think the system allowed for an independent to mount a serious challenge for the presidency. He even offered to serve as vice president for whoever won that year.
