More than 25 years ago, Anita Hill accused then-Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment in 1991, testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee led by then-Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.).

Even though she had a recent conversation with the former vice president, Hill says she still can’t support Biden in his 2020 bid to become president.

“I cannot be satisfied by simply saying I’m sorry for what happened to you,” Hill told The New York Times.

“I will be satisfied when I know there is real change and real accountability and real purpose.”

“She said she cannot support Mr. Biden … until he takes responsibility for what he did and is also troubled by the recent accusations of improper touching,” The New York Times reported.

Apparently, Hill’s concern isn’t just about his behavior during her testimony 28 years ago, but about the allegations of so many women since then.

“The focus on apology to me is one thing. But he needs to give an apology to the other women and to the American public because we know now how deeply disappointed Americans around the country were about what they saw,” Hill said. “And not just women. There are women and men now who have just really lost confidence in our government to respond to the problem of gender violence.”

Biden has said he regrets how he approached Hill during her testimony in 1991 and also realizes that his conduct with women over the years was not appropriate.

Of Hill specifically, Biden said last month, “To this day I regret I couldn’t come up with a way to get her the kind of hearing she deserved, given the courage she showed by reaching out to us.”

Any way you slice it, this is not a good look for Joe Biden on the same day he announced his run for president.

This is a lot of baggage for Joe Biden to overcome in what is sure to be a contentious 2020 race.

Whether it will matter in the long run is anyone’s guess, but it’s a lot of baggage for Joe Biden to overcome in what is sure to be a contentious 2020 race.
