Disney has released the first full trailer for it live action “Aladdin” remake, which hits theaters on May 24.
The original “Aladdin” was released in 1992 and went on to gross over $500 million worldwide.
The crew behind the remake, directed by Guy Ritchie (“King Arthur: Legend of the Sword,” “Sherlock Holmes”) and written by Ritchie and John August (“Big Fish,” “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”), released a first-look teaser late last year and some first-look footage during the last Grammys telecast as well.
The Grammy footage was widely criticized for the questionable CGI effects used to turn Will Smith into the genie originally voiced by the late Robin Williams.
“Aladdin” tells the story of Aladdin (Mena Massoud), a young peasant who finds a lamp with a genie inside (Will Smith).
He then uses this lamp to turn himself into a prince to win the heart of a woman named Jasmine (Naomi Scott).
Evil forces are also after Aladdin and the lamp.
Live action remakes of popular animated features have become a successful business for Disney. It doesn’t say a lot of good things about originality — but the House of Mouse has enjoyed huge hits by remaking movies in its vault.
“Cinderella,” “The Jungle Book” and “Beauty and the Beast” have all become massive hits for the company.
In addition to “Aladdin,” Disney is also releasing a remake of “The Lion King” this year.
