“Saturday Night Live” star Pete Davidson (shown above left) has earned a fair amount of criticism since the taping of the latest “SNL” episode.
Musician R. Kelly was the big focus of the episode . The show’s cold open mocked the rapper — who was recently indicted on multiple counts of sexual assault.
He came up again later in the show when Davidson appeared in the Weekend Update segment.
Davidson compared being a fan of R. Kelly to being a Catholic churchgoer.
The joke earned both applause and boos from the “SNL” studio audience.
“But if you support the Catholic Church, isn’t that the same thing as being an R. Kelly fan? I don’t really see the difference — only one’s music is significantly better,” joked Davidson .
The Brooklyn Diocese was no fan of the joke.
The group is now demanding that Davidson (who is from Staten Island) apologize.
“The Diocese of Brooklyn is demanding an immediate public apology from ‘Saturday Night Live’ and NBC after Saturday night’s disgraceful and offensive skit in which cast member Pete Davidson, during the Weekend Update segment, said: ‘If you support the Catholic Church, isn’t that the same thing as being an R. Kelly fan?’ The statement clearly shocked the studio audience as gasps could be heard off camera,” said the public statement from the Brooklyn Diocese.
It continues, “Apparently, the only acceptable bias these days is against the Catholic Church. The faithful of our church are disgusted by the harassment by those in news and entertainment, and this sketch offends millions. The mockery of this difficult time in the church’s history serves no purpose.”
Davidson has not officially responded to the criticism, but he’s been known to take criticism well.
The comedian previously earned some high-profile critics when he mocked Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) (above right) for his appearance, mainly his eyepatch.
The eyepatch covers Crenshaw’s glass eye, which is the result of an injury he received while serving overseas as a Navy SEAL.
In response to the criticism, Crenshaw later appeared on a segment of “SNL” and mocked Davidson’s own appearance .
The two have kept in contact since then .
