Americans are just as likely to identify as pro-life or pro-choice these days in a “sudden and dramatic shift” toward valuing the lives of the unborn, according to a new Marist poll.
Commissioned by the Knights of Columbus, the poll revealed that 47 percent of Americans identify as pro-life — while 47 percent identify as pro-choice.
This marked a “substantial, double-digit shift” from just one month ago, according to the Knights of Columbus.
A Marist poll from last month showed that only 38 percent of Americans called themselves pro-life, while 55 percent proclaimed to be pro-choice.
Over the last month, Democrats have faced a series of controversies surrounding their drastic shift towards late-term abortions. The state of New York passed a law on January 22 — the 46th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade — allowing abortions up until the time of birth. The state’s Reproductive Health Act even earned a standing ovation from New York lawmakers.
Virginia Democrats then horrified pro-life advocates even more after a video surfaced of Kathy Tran (D), a Virginia delegate, defending the late-abortion bill she sponsored. When asked if her bill allowed abortions up until the moment a mother was about to give birth, Tran replied, “My bill would allow that, yes.”
Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam (D) (shown above left) took the shock factor a step further when he appeared to defend infanticide. The governor said during a radio interview captured on video that “if a mother is in labor, I can tell you exactly what would happen. The infant would be delivered … The infant would be kept comfortable. The infant would be resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother.”
The new Marist poll found that Democrats who identify as pro-life jumped 20 percent — to reach 34 percent — from January to February.
The number of younger Americans identifying as pro-life also jumped — from 28 percent to 47 percent.
“Current proposals that promote late-term abortion have reset the landscape and language on abortion in a pronounced — and very measurable — way,” said Barbara Carvalho, the poll’s director, as the Knights of Columbus noted.
“The recent legal changes to late-term abortion and the debate [that] followed have not gone unnoticed by the general public,” Carvalho added. “In just one month, there has been a significant increase in the proportion of Americans who see themselves as pro-life and an equally notable decline in those who describe themselves as pro-choice.”
The Knights of Columbus noted this marks the first time since 2009 that “as many or more Americans have identified as pro-life as have identified as pro-choice.”
The poll also found that 71 percent of Americans oppose third-trimester abortions — including 60 percent of Democrats — while only 25 percent of Americans support such a drastic procedure.
Approximately 80 percent of Americans want abortion limited to the first three months of pregnancy as well.
Live Action founder and president Lila Rose tweeted on Monday, “In the last month: A new Marist poll shows a 9 percent growth of those who identify as pro-life … Americans are waking up to the evil & cruelty of abortion … Many are seeing that abortion breaks bonds of love, breaks hearts, takes lives … The movement for life is growing.”

The official Twitter account of Republican National Committee (RNC) heralded the poll as proof “that radical Democrats’ — like Governor Ralph Northam — aggressive views on late-term abortion are completely out of touch with everyday Americans.”

President Donald Trump slammed Northam directly for his late-term abortion stance during his State of the Union address earlier in February.
“There could be no greater contrast to the beautiful image of a mother holding her infant child than the chilling displays our nation saw in recent days,” Trump said, noting that “lawmakers in New York cheered with delight upon the passage of legislation that would allow a baby to be ripped from the mother’s womb moments from birth.”
“And then, we had the case of the governor of Virginia, where he stated he would execute a baby after birth,” Trump added.
The president asked Congress to pass legislation “to prohibit the late-term abortion of children who can feel pain in the mother’s womb.”
He asked lawmakers to “work together to build a culture that cherishes innocent life.”
The Senate is voting on Monday on the “Born-Alive” Infants Protection Act. If signed into law, the bill would guarantee medical care for all babies who survive a botched abortion attempt.
And this past Friday, the Trump administration energized the pro-life movement by announcing it plans to cut off millions of dollars to Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers with a final rule revising the revamped Title X program.
