Pelosi, Schumer Release Statement After Trump’s Emergency Declaration — and Ask Republicans for Help

President Donald Trump spoke from the White House Rose Garden on Friday morning and declared a national emergency at the southern border [1].

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) are reaching out to Republicans in a bipartisan effort in the act of preserving the Constitution — with Trump’s latest move to redirect funds without asking the House of Representatives.

President Trump said that this move would be lost in the court system in the early going.

But he said he hoped that when it does get to the Supreme Court — it would pass.

“This is plainly a power grab by a disappointed president, who has gone outside the bounds of the law to try to get what he failed to achieve in the constitutional legislative process,” said Pelosi and Schumer in a joint statement.

“Just as both parties honored our oath to protect the American people by passing the conference committee bill, the Congress on a bipartisan basis must honor the Constitution by defending our system of checks and balances,” they said.

“The president is not above the law.”

“The Congress cannot let the president shred the Constitution,”

Democrats and some experts feel that Trump will lose because this is an “appropriation of funds” move without working with Congress.

Other national emergencies [1] didn’t do that — hence the setting of a new precedent, which Pelosi has been using as an example for the last couple of days.
