Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) awkwardly pretended to be on a phone call in order to avoid answering a Daily Caller reporter’s questions about his opinion on the sexual assault allegations against Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax (D).

Sanders called on Saturday for Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam (D) to resign amid a blackface and KKK picture scandal so that Fairfax (above right) could replace him and “begin a new day for Virginia.”

The governor “should resign,” Sanders wrote.

And “Fairfax should step in,” he also said.

Here is the full tweet.

Northam fielded bipartisan calls to resign after a picture from his 1984 medical school yearbook page surfaced depicting two individuals standing together — someone in blackface and someone in a Ku Klux Klan outfit.

But Northam thus far has refused to step down from the position he won in 2017.

The Washington Post reported shortly thereafter that an unnamed woman had accused Fairfax of sexually assaulting her in a hotel room in 2004 during the Democratic National Convention in Boston.

Fairfax admitted to engaging in a sexual encounter with a woman — but insisted that it was consensual.

No witnesses have been able to corroborate the Fairfax accuser’s story.

The Daily Caller’s Henry Rodgers attempted to flag down Sanders in the Senate hallway and asked him questions about Fairfax.

But Sanders refused to answer them and stepped into an elevator.

“Sen. Bernie Sanders will not say if he believes Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax’s accuser,” Rodgers tweeted along with a video.

Rodgers caught up with Sanders again later on in the day.

But this time, Sanders pretended to be having a conversation on the phone with someone.

Rodgers called him out on it after Sanders flashed his phone at the reporter and the screen clearly revealed he was faking a call.

“Bernie is back and and this time he is taking fake phone calls to dodge questions about if he believes Lt. Gov Justin Fairfax’s accuser … WATCH THIS,” Rodgers tweeted with a video.

“Do you believe Justin Fairfax, his accuser? His accuser? You don’t?” Rodgers asked Sanders in the video.

Finally Sanders flashed his phone at the reporter and said, “Excuse me! Stop following me around!”

“You’re not on the phone. You’re not on the phone,” Rodgers noted.

An irked Sanders walked away and replied, “Excuse me.”

“Sir, I’m asking you a question. Justin Fairfax’s accuser?” Rodgers pressed on, but to no avail.

The Daily Caller’s Saagar Enjeti retweeted the video, writing, “Gold: Sanders fakes a call to avoid @henryrodgersdc questions about Fairfax’s accuser and indignantly calls him out. Screen clearly shows he wasn’t on the phone.”

Sanders and Democratic senators were quick to pounce on Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh last year after three women publicly accused him of sexual assault. The lawmakers were all too willing to believe those women — even though Kavanaugh vehemently and consistently denied the accusations and even though there was no corroboration for those charges.

But liberal senators like Sanders are now avoiding questions about Fairfax’s accuser.

“I haven’t even looked at the details about that. I really haven’t. I just know the high level. I haven’t really looked at the details about any of that. It’s a tough situation but I just don’t look at the details. It’s just not something that I’ve focused on,” Sen. Doug Jones (D-Ala.) told The Daily Caller.

Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) also told the publication, “Well, I think we’ve got to get more information at this point. I don’t have anything other than just the very initial information. Certainly it needs to be taken seriously. But we’ll have to get more information.”

And Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) actually told the outlet, “I don’t know who Justin Fairfax is.”
