It is really, really simple, says newly elected lawmaker Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.).

Just be yourself.

She was talking about the instructions and guidance she’s been giving to her Democratic colleagues in Congress about how to use social media in the best way possible — now that she’s joined the House of Representatives and is working in Washington, D.C.

Appearing on Stephen Colbert’s late-night show on Monday night, Ocasio-Cortez, who is 29, explained to him how she’s been instructing others on the most effective use of Twitter.

“I give them more of my general theory and approach to social media.”

“I said, you know, rule number one is to be authentic, to be yourself and don’t try to be anyone that you’re not,” she said.

“So don’t try to talk like a young kid if you’re not a young kid. Don’t post a meme if you don’t know what a meme is, is literally my advice” — at this, the audience laughed.

“And I said, ‘Don’t talk like the Founding Fathers on Twitter.'”

In summary, she said, “If you’re a mom who likes to garden, talk like that — and that’s all you’ve got to do.”

Earlier on Monday, the Democratic socialist, who began her term as an elected lawmaker on January 3 with the 116th Congress, also said the issue of climate change is a “generational” one.

“I think that the part of it that is generational is that millennials and people, in Gen Z, and all these folks that come after us, are looking up and we’re like, ‘The world is gonna end in 12 years if we don’t address climate change. And your biggest issue is — your biggest issue is how are we going to pay for it? And this is this is the war, this is our World War II,” Ocasio-Cortez said during an event in New York City to honor Martin Luther King.
