True to form, “Saturday Night Live” went after President Donald Trump in its first episode of 2019.
Actor Alec Baldwin returned to portray Trump in the show’s cold open — in a scene that was a play on the popular game show “Deal or No Deal.”
In the scene, Baldwin’s Trump participated in “Deal or No Deal: Government Shutdown Edition” and tried to end the shutdown with the right deal.
Played by cast member Kenan Thompson, Steve Harvey hosted the show. But instead of the models that “Deal or No Deal” fans are accustomed to, each suitcase in the mock game show was represented by members of Congress.
The “sponsors” of the fake game show included green beef — “it shouldn’t be green, but ain’t nobody at the FDA to inspect it” — and an elderly lady in an inner tube way out in the ocean — “The Coast Guard will be back soon. Hang in there, Beth.”
Baldwin’s Trump was playing for a charity himself, “Habitat for Hannity.” The goal of the mock charity was to buy Fox News host Sean Hannity a “second beach house.”
After some back and forth between Baldwin’s Trump and cast members playing various lawmakers, the president finally decided to make a deal.
Cast member Pete Davidson showed up to play a Clemson football player with a suitcase from White Castle. Baldwin’s Trump then made a deal for the case — which was filled with 30 “hamberders,” a reference to a misspelling in a tweet in which the president talked about serving championship athletes of the Clemson Tigers football team hamburgers and other fast food during the team’s recent White House visit .
“I guess that makes as much sense as anything else that’s going on these days,” Thompson’s Harvey said following the “deal.”
The latest episode of “SNL” aired amid the ongoing partial government shutdown.
Trump and Democrat lawmakers are still at a standstill when it comes to funding the government, although Trump now has put forward a deal — and it remains to be seen what the group can work out.
The president wants funding for a border security wall between Mexico and the United States, but Democrats thus far have refused to budge on the matter.
