There is “no downside to securing our border,” but Democratic leaders “don’t want to give” President Donald Trump “a win” on border wall funding ahead of a potential government shutdown, former U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) acting Director Thomas Homan said Tuesday night on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle.”

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) met on Tuesday with Trump to discuss whether or not they could reach a budget agreement before federal funding expires and a government shutdown commences.

Reporters and cameras captured the first 15 minutes of the contentious meeting, as Trump passionately demanded full border wall funding and the Democrats adamantly rejected that proposal.

“If we don’t get what we want one way or the other … I will shut down the government,” Trump said.

“I am proud to shut down the government for border security because the people of this country don’t want criminals with lots of problems and drugs pouring into the country,” he added.

Homan told host Laura Ingraham that he wished Trump would have asked Schumer on camera about the latter’s 2006 vote in support of border barriers.

“What changed, other than the anti-Trump agenda?” Homan asked, emphasizing that “this is an anti-Trump agenda. They don’t want to give him a win.”

“They’re putting their political futures ahead of this country’s security, which is their number-one responsibility. Shame on them,” Homan added.

Pelosi, in particular, is still struggling to obtain the Democratic votes necessary to secure her position as speaker of the House come January, after the newly elected Democratic majority takes power.

“I don’t care if you’re a Republican or a Democrat — there is no downside [to] securing our border,” Homan said.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) told Ingraham that Trump “laid out a lot of real important specific details” during the meeting as to “why it’s important that we secure the border.”

“I think what you’re seeing right now — and today [it] was on display in the White House — [is that] Washington Democrats want open borders more than they want open government,” Scalise said. “We need to secure the border. President Trump ran on securing the border. It’s time we back him up on it.”

Ingraham urged Trump and congressional Republicans “to keep the pressure on the Democrats.” She said, “They’re on the wrong side of this and the American people are with the Republicans on this.”

Although Scalise said that border wall funding could pass in the House in the GOP’s final days as the majority, he said the Senate votes aren’t yet there.

“The president’s saying, ‘I’ll at least meet with Senate Democrats and House Democrats to see if we can get an agreement,'” Scalise said.

“The president is trying to get an agreement to solve the problem,” he added.
