With John Kelly set to leave the White House as President Donald Trump’s chief of staff, the search is on for a replacement.

Kelly’s departure, predictably, has become an opportunity for Trump critics to blast the current administration and to paint things as chaotic — even though most administrations go through a handful of people in such top positions.

“The Late Show” host Stephen Colbert went after the president on Monday night and had a recommendation for a new pick for Trump’s chief of staff.

After running down Kelly’s departure and pushing a report from The New York Times that the president is having trouble finding a new chief of staff — something he denies — Colbert suggested (drumroll …) himself for the job.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to throw my hat into the ring,” said Colbert.

The comedian continued, “Mr. President, I, Stephen Colbert, am your next White House chief of staff. Now, will I be able to control the president? No. Will we fight? Yeah. But will I bring a steady hand to a tumultuous West Wing? Also, no.”

“But no one could,” he added. “Who cares? And no, I don’t agree with the president’s policies and no, this won’t help the country, but I believe in my heart of hearts that this could be fun for me.”

Colbert then took things a step further by comparing the Trump administration to the Titanic, the ill-fated ship that sank in 1912 just four days into its maiden voyage after hitting an iceberg — leading to the death of more than 1,500 people.

“Who would pass up the chance to spend 10 minutes on the deck of the Titanic while it’s sinking? I don’t know. I’m really curious to hear what a band sounds like when they know they’re about to take the big bath,” said Colbert.

The president has denied on Twitter any trouble in his search for a new chief of staff.

“Fake News has it purposely wrong. Many, over ten, are vying for and wanting the White House Chief of Staff position. Why wouldn’t someone want one of the truly great and meaningful jobs in Washington,” Trump wrote in a recent tweet.

“Please report news correctly. Thank you!”

Colbert’s morbid curiosity aside, this attempt to attack the Trump administration over something so routine is just part of Colbert’s schtick at this point.

The liberal-leaning comedian seems capable of firing up any sort of audience only when he focuses on politics.

It’s why he not only has “The Late Show” to complain about Trump, but also the animated Showtime series “Our Cartoon President,” another leftist show that targets the president and his administration week after week.
