Congresswoman-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), a Democratic socialist, thinks that her radical Green New Deal proposal requiring a transition to 100 percent renewable energy will “truly deliver and establish economic, social and racial justice” in the United States.

Ocasio-Cortez (pictured above) spoke Monday at a town hall meeting called “Solving Our Climate Crisis.”

She appeared alongside Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), CNN commentator Van Jones, actress Shailene Woodley, and other leading climate change activists.

The young progressive star began her remarks by saying it is “unsurprising” that the response from people like President Donald Trump to “any bold proposal that we have is to incite fear — to incite fear of loss, to incite fear of others, to incite fear of our future.”

“But the only way we are going to get out of this situation is choosing to be courageous,” Ocasio-Cortez argued.

“And first of all, it’s just plain wrong — the idea that we’re going to somehow lose economic activity” by implementing the Green New Deal.

Ocasio-Cortez claimed “it’s inevitable” that committing to 100 percent renewable energy will create jobs.

“It’s inevitable that we’re going to create industry. And it’s inevitable that we can use the transition to 100 percent renewable energy as the vehicle to truly deliver and establish economic, social and racial justice in the United States of America,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “That is our proposal, and that is what we are here to do.”

The lawmaker-elect did not explain exactly how adhering to 100 percent renewable energy would establish true economic, social and racial justice.

But she said “this moment” in history “demands of us right now” a Green New Deal.

“This is going to be the Great Society, the moon shot, the Civil Rights movement of our generation. That is the scale — that is the scale of the ambition that this movement is going to require,” Ocasio-Cortez claimed.

She has also compared her Election Day victory to the historic U.S. moon landing in 1969, by the way.

Ocasio-Cortez pulled off a stunning primary upset victory this summer against 10-term incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley (D-N.Y.), the heavily funded 56-year-old chairman of the House Democratic Caucus.

She easily won the general election on November 6, and at age 29 she will be the youngest congresswoman in U.S. history.

She previously worked as a campaign organizer for Sanders and is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America.

Ocasio-Cortez is part of a crop of progressive minority women voted into the House this year, including Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.), Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) and Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.).

During her first day of orientation on Capitol Hill in November, Ocasio-Cortez joined radical climate change activists in a protest outside the office of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

As a result, Pelosi said in a statement that she “recommended to my House Democratic colleagues that we reinstate the select committee to address the climate crisis.”

Ocasio-Cortez celebrated the idea but demanded more action on climate change.
