What could have turned into a harrowing — and all-too common — scenario has deescalated peacefully.
Youngstown State University just lifted a lockdown after a man accused of pulling a gun on another man turned himself in.
The suspect is now in police custody, many news outlets are reporting.
Classes resumed at 3 p.m. EST.
The incident occurred at 11:10 a.m. inside the Kilcawley Center at on the campus of YSU.
Police said a student and non-student were arguing when the non-student pulled a gun on the student.
Many people were nearby when it happened, according to reporting from WKBN-TV, a CBS-affiliated station.
“It was a lot of yelling, and pushing and shoving,” a Youngstown officer said.
No shots were fired and no one was harmed.
In addition to the lockdown at YSU, lockdowns were also placed on the Youngstown Community Health Center, Choffin Career and Technical Center downtown, St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, and the main library.
Tragically, lockdown drills are now the new normal at schools and college campuses across the country in the wake of the horrific school shooting in Parkland, Florida — where a gunman killed 17 people and wounded 15 others at a high school on Valentine’s Day 2018.
In addition to the lockdown at YSU, lockdowns were also placed on the Youngstown Community Health Center, Choffin Career and Technical Center downtown, St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, and the main library.
The suspect in Youngstown, a black man with a gun, was described as wearing a red hoodie with white lettering on it.
He has dreadlocks and a black backpack, said WKBN.
In the meantime, YSU had been sending students and parents alerts in real time.
