Stephen Colbert hosted a live show on Tuesday night to cover midterm election results.

The last time Colbert did such a thing was in 2016, as results for the last presidential election were rolling in. It was the show in which audience members had the pleasure of watching Colbert come to the realization that — despite his best efforts — Donald Trump was becoming America’s president.

“If you remember our last live election show, well — that makes one of us. The bad news that night took me a bit off-guard, but tonight I’m prepared,” the comedian said Tuesday night.

Colbert celebrated the news that Democrats had won control of the House early in his show.

“That’s the first news of the evening … they can now open investigations into the president and we can finally find out if Donald Trump has ever done anything unethical,” he said.

Colbert also managed to attack Fox News for simply reporting correctly on election results.

He showed footage of the news network’s announcing Democrat victories and then said, “Is Donald Trump right? Is Fox the only not-fake news? Are we in the upside-down?”

The “upside-down” line is a reference to the popular Netflix show “Stranger Things.”

Colbert also showed a clip of Trump at a rally saying the midterms used to be “boring” — but are now more exciting.

“Gee, I wonder why?” the comedian responded. “It used to be super boring to run out of the pool screaming, but ever since I pooped in it, it became all the rage.”

Colbert also tried his best to make Democrat Beto O’Rourke, who failed to win Ted Cruz’s Senate seat, look good after what is a pretty embarrassing loss when one considers the millions O’Rourke collected from Hollywood for his run.

“By not being Ted Cruz, Beto is still a winner,” Colbert quipped.

Colbert’s guest on the show included “Patriot Act” host Hasan Minhaj, “The Circus” producer John Heilemann, and journalist Alex Wagner.

Minhaj also took some time to defend O’Rourke amid the politician’s loss.

“I am sad that he lost, but it’s actually not a partisan thing. He had all of black excellence backing him. Beyoncé, Travis Scott … LeBron James,” the comedian said.

Wagner later stated about the country, “I feel like we still call this place the United States of America, but really, and pardon the cliché, but it feels like the Divided States of America.”

There was talk of 2020, too.

When Colbert asked Heinemann if the next presidential race had just begun, the documentary producer replied, “It started an hour ago.”
