Leftist comedian George Lopez (pictured above left) is in some trouble over a recent physical altercation with an alleged Trump supporter at a Hooters restaurant.
The comedian is now being charged with misdemeanor battery over the incident, according to TMZ.
The altercation took place at a Hooters restaurant last month in New Mexico.
Lopez was in the state filming the movie “Walking with Herb.” The film also stars Edward James Olmos (“Miami Vice,” “Battlestar Galactica”) and Kathleen Quinlan (“Apollo 13,” “A Civil Action”).
In a video posted by TMZ of the scuffle, a patron at the restaurant can be seen calling Lopez his “boy.” Lopez at one point grabs the man by the neck and the man sarcastically calls the comedian a “bad***.”
Police reportedly spoke with Lopez one day later at a golf course about the fight with the man at Hooters to get the comedian’s perspective on the event. Lopez said the man was filming him and refused to stop. He said the man was also making “MAGA [Make America Great Again] jokes” and taunting the liberal Lopez in an attempt to rile him up — Lopez is an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump.
Lopez said he only tried grabbing the man’s phone away after he refused to stop filming the comedian.
Lopez is set to appear in court next month over the incident.
The comedian’s past political statements include tweeting out a picture of drug kingpin Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán holding a fake severed head of Donald Trump in 2016; pretending to urinate on the president’s star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame; and even recommending that Trump deport the police instead of illegal immigrants.
Beyond his stand-up comedy, Lopez is best known for a self-titled sitcom that lasted from 2002 to 2007.
“George Lopez” had a total of 120 episodes and was executive produced by Academy Award-winning actress Sandra Bullock (“The Heat,” “The Blind Side,” “Miss Congeniality”). Several attempts at sitcoms by Lopez since that show have failed.
Lopez, 57, has also appeared in such films as “The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl,” “Valentine’s Day,” “Swing Vote,” and “The Spy Next Door.”
He can next be seen in not only “Walking with Herb,” but also “The Tax Collector,” a thriller that stars Shia Labeouf (“Man Down,” “Transformers”) and is written and directed by Navy veteran and “Suicide Squad” filmmaker David Ayer.
