MSNBC anchor Andrea Mitchell falsely insisted Monday on “Andrea Mitchell Reports” that controversial Broward County Supervisor of Elections Brenda Snipes “is a Republican” and hardly constitutes a “Democratic official” doing “the bidding of Democratic candidates,” amid accusations of election fraud.
Snipes (pictured above right) and the heavily Democratic county became engulfed in controversy in the days following Tuesday’s midterm elections when GOP candidates’ comfortable leads over Democratic candidates sank enough, as ballots poured in, to trigger recounts.
Outgoing Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) and Governor-Elect Ron DeSantis (R) still hold slim margins of victory over incumbent Sen. Bill Nelson (D) and Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum (D), respectively.
Scott filed two lawsuits against Broward County and Palm Beach County as the two Democrat-majority counties continued to count an unknown number of ballots past the state-mandated deadline.
President Donald Trump, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Scott all accused Snipes of misconduct this time around for her failure to comply with state election laws and her lack of transparency.
Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) appointed Snipes, a Democrat, to her position in 2003 to replace Miriam Oliphant, who had been removed for her misconduct during the 2002 gubernatorial primary.
Snipes became embroiled in controversy earlier this year when a judge ruled that she had illegally destroyed congressional ballots in 2016, and subsequently required supervision.
Mainstream media outlets like CNN and MSNBC have spent a significant amount of time downplaying Republicans’ concerns about election fraud. But Mitchell (above left) took it one step further.
“And we should also point out that Brenda Snipes in Broward County is a Republican appointed by former governor, then-Governor Jeb Bush,” Mitchell insisted.
“So she was put in by a Republican governor after the mess that we all remember from 2000. And she’s hardly a Democratic official or someone doing the bidding of the Democratic candidates there,” Mitchell added.
But Snipes is, in fact, a Democrat and has run as a Democrat for her re-election campaigns in Broward County, according to the Sun Sentinel.
Even Bush himself took to Twitter Monday to bash Snipes, writing, “There is no question that Broward County Supervisor of Elections Brenda Snipes failed to comply with Florida law on multiple counts, undermining Floridians’ confidence in our electoral process. Supervisor Snipes should be removed from her office following the recounts.”

But Mitchell and NBC News correspondent Ali Vitali downplayed those concerns in their reporting.
“You mentioned in your show open that people have been talking about fraud, but not providing any evidence of that,” Vitali told Mitchell, noting that a Florida judge “took note of that and cautioned everyone to tamp their rhetoric down because what’s said in front of these election offices is being heard around the world and taken seriously and that these words have consequences.”
“And so when you hear Rick Scott and the president of the United States and other Republicans come out and talking about fraud or ballots coming up out of nowhere, there’s been no evidence of that,” Vitali insisted. “I think that’s really important as we go forward with the legal side of this and the recount itself, Andrea.”
Trump tweeted Saturday, “Trying to STEAL two big elections in Florida! We are watching closely!”

Scott insisted Monday on Fox News’ “Fox & Friends” that Nelson is a “sore loser” who is “just here to steal this election.”
