Democrats were for generations advocates of strong border enforcement, correctly arguing that illegal aliens drive down the wages of blue-collar workers and union members.

That was especially true in Michigan, where auto and steel workers once were a dominant force in the state’s politics.

Today those workers have been abandoned by Democrat Gretchen Whitmer, who is running for governor and her running mate for Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilcrist.

Both have embraced open borders, the elimination of both the Department of Homeland Security and the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency, in addition to protecting sanctuary cities.

It is a sad turn of events as Democrats have embraced the demands of big business, particularly big tech in Silicon Valley, and turned their backs on working men and women.

Whitmer and Gilcrist are not alone. As thousands of migrants work their way up through Mexico intent on crossing the U.S. border illegally, Democrats have rolled out the red carpet for the migrants.

Ignoring the advice of Democratic strategists who argue party members should hide their positions on immigration, Sen. Kamala Harris (D.-Calif.) embraced the caravan of would-be illegals, saying that America is a “welcoming” country.

Other Democrats’ silence about the pending confrontation at the border is a sign of consent.

This is in stark contrast to leading Democrat voices from the recent past.

President Donald Trump highlighted the change in philosophy when he tweeted out a clip of Barack Obama saying, “We simply cannot allow people to pour into the United States undetected, undocumented, unchecked, and circumventing the line of people who are waiting patiently, diligently and lawfully to become immigrants into this country.”

In 2009 Sen. Chuck Schumer sounded more like Donald Trump than himself when he said, “First, illegal immigration is wrong.” Schumer added, “a primary goal of comprehensive immigration reform must be to dramatically curtail future illegal immigration.”

On the state level, Democrats have embraced an even more radical philosophy. In California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom who is now running for governor, has pledged to provide illegal aliens universal health care through the state’s Medicaid program.

In Michigan, during a recent debate with her Republican opponent Bill Schuette, Whitmer refused to answer questions regarding whether she supports turning Michigan into a sanctuary state.

She also refused to address her previous demands that ICE be abolished, despite saying so just a few months ago.

Michigan is the home of the Reagan Democrats — who are willing to cross the political divide in order to support candidates that will protect the nation, secure jobs and are careful stewards of taxpayer dollars.

The Federation for American Immigration Reform notes that at the federal, state, and local levels, taxpayers are forced to subsidize almost $135 billion to cover the costs incurred by the presence of more than 12.5 million illegal aliens, and about 4.2 million citizen children of illegal aliens. That amounts to a tax burden of approximately $8,075 per illegal alien family member and a total of $115,894,597,664.

Americans, in the eyes of leading Democrats, should take a back seat to those willing to violate laws to enter the United States.

Rolling out the welcome mat in states like Michigan will only burden taxpayers even more, in an already highly taxed state.

The days when Democrats wanted to secure our borders has passed.

Americans, in the eyes of leading Democrats, should take a back seat to those willing to violate laws to enter the United States. The migrant caravan and Democrats on the state level like California and Michigan have made that clear.

The only question is whether voters, particularly those who have voted Democrat in the past, will take note. Bill Schuette and others have taken a strong stand in favor of border security. Blue-collar workers should reward him with their support.
