“The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” took a break from bashing President Donald Trump on Tuesday night in order to shift its focus to the country’s first lady, Melania Trump.

In an attempt to rip apart Mrs. Trump’s recent viral and in-depth interview with ABC News, Colbert brought on actress Laura Benanti to portray the first lady in what was a mock interview. Colbert described it as “her [Trump’s] first exclusive interview since her first exclusive interview.”

Colbert questioned his fake Melania Trump on topics such as President Trump’s alleged affairs and the media’s treatment of her.

“I do not focus on who he [Donald Trump] focuses [on],” she said about the president’s alleged affairs.

“Maybe he should go focus himself.”

Benanti made each “focus” sound as close as she could to a certain four-letter curse word, almost as if she was deliberately trying to prove in the segment how desperate and lazy the writing for Colbert’s show has become these days.

On the media’s treatment of her, Benanti’s Trump said, “I have been called the worst names possible. Cold. Heartless. Eric’s stepmother.”

The actual Trump said in her real interview recently that she was one of the most bullied people in the world because of the media’s insinuations and overall coverage of her and of every step she takes.

Colbert also asked about the first lady’s viral “I Don’t Care” jacket, which the real Trump said was a comment on the media’s misguided focus.

Benanti’s Trump did her best to make the first lady look like a hypocrite.

“The media needs to stop paying attention to my clothes and instead pay attention to my words — unless my words are on my clothes, then pay attention to the words on my clothes and not the part of my clothes that are not my words. Are my words making sense or do you need me to write on some clothes for you?” she ranted.

It’s mind-boggling at this point that Colbert has a professionally produced late-night program. Not only do his monologues seem like old rehashes of insults from leftist trolls doled out all week long on Twitter, but skits like this one come across as sad high school productions by kids just getting into politics. It’s as if they’re attempting to be “edgy” by doing the safest thing possible — going after someone with the last name Trump.
