Nicole Kidman Says Her Marriage to Tom Cruise Kept Her from Being Sexually Harassed

While many actresses have come forward in the era of #MeToo to tell tales of sexual harassment and assault at the hands of powerful Hollywood men, one actress is now saying she mostly avoided such experiences — and it was all thanks to her marriage.

Australian actress Nicole Kidman married Tom Cruise in 1990 after the two starred together in the film “Days of Thunder.”

The two would end up divorcing in 2001.

“I got married very young, but it definitely wasn’t power for me — it was protection,” Kidman told the BBC about her marriage.

She added, “I married for love, but being married to an extremely powerful man kept me from being sexually harassed.”

The “Beguiled” and “Big Little Lies” actress continued, “Of course I’ve had #MeToo moments — since I was little! But do I want to expose them in an article? No. Do they come out in my work? Absolutely.”

Cruise and Kidman had a son and daughter while they were together. Their daughter, Isabella, is now 25, and their son, Conner, is now 23.

Kidman and Cruise also starred in the films “Eyes Wide Shut” and “Far and Away” together, which were released in 1999 and 1992, respectively.

Kidman, who stars in the upcoming DC Comics “Aquaman” film, said she was “cocooned” while being married to one of Hollywood’s most respected and powerful men.

“I would work, but I was still very much cocooned. So, when I came out of it at 32, 33, it’s almost like I had to grow up,” she said.

Kidman, now 51, went on to marry country singer Keith Urban in 2006. The couple are still together, and they share two daughters: 10-year-old Sunday and seven-year-old Faith.

Actresses including Rose McGowan and others have come forward since last year to accuse disgraced film producer Harvey Weinstein and other men of sexual misconduct against them.

Those who have faced accusations include former industry juggernauts Weinstein, director Brett Ratner (the “Rush Hour” trilogy, “X-Men: The Last Stand”), and Louis C.K.

C.K. is one of the few to actually be attempting a professional comeback in the wake of the accusations against him. Since admitting to multiple cases of sexual misconduct, C.K. had tried returning to stand-up by taking the stage at several New York comedy clubs.

In a recent performance, he reportedly said that admitting to sexual misconduct had cost him $35 million.
