“The minute I heard about it, I wanted to do it,” writer Andrew Klavan (shown above right) told LifeZette by phone about how he got involved in crafting the upcoming “Gosnell.”
The film tells the true story of Kermit Gosnell, an abortion doctor who was convicted in 2013 on three counts of first-degree murder and one count of involuntary manslaughter. Actor Dean Cain (shown above left) appears in the film.
After Gosnell’s clinic was raided on a suspicion that drugs were being dealt there, authorities discovered what was described by some as a “house of horrors.”
Gosnell not only had an unsanitary lab and an untrained staff — but he was also performing very late-term abortions. He reportedly even cut the necks of living babies.
The mainstream media largely ignored his story because of Gosnell’s chosen profession — which makes his story all the more outrageous.
Tackling such a project would likely not be at the top of many Hollywood writers’ lists of things to do, but Andrew Klavan is no ordinary Hollywood writer.
Klavan has always been open about his conservative values and the political biases within mainstream Hollywood.
He even produces content for the right-leaning Daily Wire.
Despite his politics, Klavan has managed to have a good bit of success as an entertainer, mostly through his novels. Two of those novels, “Don’t Say a Word” and “True Crime,” were even turned into films — the latter of which was directed by and starred Clint Eastwood.
On the subject of “Gosnell,” Klavan said the true-crime nature of the story actually put it right in his wheelhouse. “It’s a true crime story, which is what I do,” he told LifeZette.
Despite the involvement of abortion in the story, Klavan and the creators were steadfast in their determination to create a nonpolitical film, one motivated not by agenda but rather by the sometimes jaw-dropping details in the Gosnell case.
“That’s what everybody wanted,” said Klavan, who lives in Los Angeles. “Nobody wanted to just sit there and preach about abortion — it’s not a very good story.”
On why the mainstream media passed over the story at the time it was happening, Klavan believes it’s the same reason the film itself struggled so hard to find financing and then distribution.
“They [the mainstream media] were protecting what they considered to be the right to abortion,” Klavan said. “That really tells you something about the logic of abortion itself.”
Klavan doesn’t think conservatives should worry about leftists in control of the media and Hollywood, though.
“They are going to simply become irrelevant,” he said, pointing out that there are so many avenues for independent media and art today that conservatives can work outside the system.
“If we like it, we don’t have to care if they like it.”
