Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas) said Friday morning he is more confident about the upcoming elections than he has been in quite some time — both for his fellow Texan, Sen. Ted Cruz (shown above left), and for the GOP as a whole.

Cornyn (above right) said on “The Laura Ingraham Show” that the bruising confirmation battle over Justice Brett Kavanaugh has galvanized GOP voters who seemed likely to skip the November elections. The radical behavior of Democratic politicians and their progressive backers has only reinforced that.

“Do we want to turn the government over to these people after the midterm election? I don’t think so,” he said.

The backlash that the Kavanaugh hearings provoked among Republican voters seems to be helping Senate candidates across the country. For evidence, Cornyn need look no further than his backyard.

Republican Cruz leads Democratic challenger Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas) by 9 and 8 points, respectively, in surveys released Thursday and Friday.

“Ted’s in good shape … But as you know, this is all about turnout,” he said.

As for O’Rourke, the congressman’s comments about opposing Kavanaugh based on abortion rights shows he is a bad fit for conservative Texas, Cornyn said.

“I know Beto pretty well, and he’s a nice enough guy. But clearly he’s not running for the United States Senate from Texas,”

“I know Beto pretty well, and he’s a nice enough guy. But clearly he’s not running for the United States Senate from Texas,” he said. “He’s out of step with Texas values … My only suspicion, Laura, is he’s running for the Democratic nomination for president in 2020 because he is appealing to the national Democrats and the hard Left who we’re seeing create this sort of mob rule.”

Cornyn criticized former Attorney General Eric Holder for calling on supporters of Georgia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams to “kick ’em” when Republicans “go low.”

The rhetoric is irresponsible, Cornyn said.

“At some point, it gets to the level of incitement,” he said. “We’re not talking about free speech. We’re talking about inciting people to violence like Eric Holder did, which is dangerous. And I don’t think we ought to reward that at all.”

And it is not just one or two outliers, Cornyn said.

“The Democratic Party that I used to know has gotten hijacked by people who disrupt hearings,” he said. “Normally mild-mannered senators like [New Jersey Democrat] Cory Booker proudly proclaim, ‘I’m breaking the rules’ by releasing confidential information during the [Kavanaugh confirmation] hearing.”

Cornyn attributed much of the bizarre behavior on the Left to illogical anger at President Donald Trump — what some have called Trump Derangement Syndrome.

“He makes their heads explode, and they act in all sorts of irrational ways,” he said.
