Willie Nelson’s decision to headline a rally for Texas Democratic Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke led to a lot of heated reactions from his right-leaning fans.

“That’s it, I’m done. What a disappointment,” wrote one fan on Facebook in response to the news.

Another said, “Good bye Willie … you are not on the right side … Take a look around you and do the right thing … I always thought you were a patriot … Wow what a letdown. You would pick a socialist agenda and an anti-American fellow like BETO, shame on you.”

Others called for a boycott of the singer.

“Patriots, time to boycott any and all thing Willie Nelson. He is performing a benefit concert for Ted Cruz’s opponent, Beto O’Rourke. Let’s make this go viral! #BoycottWillie #BoycottWillie #BoycottNike,” wrote one person on Twitter.

While one would think an artist would be bothered by such negative feelings and reactions from fans, Nelson has revealed that he doesn’t much care what his conservative fans think of his politics.

(Take that, in other words.)

“I don’t care,” said the country singer after being asked about the backlash on the ABC chat show “The View.”

“You know, they’re entitled to their opinions and I’m entitled to mine,” Nelson, 85, added.

The legendary musician said he has been voting for Democrats all his life.

He later said about his public endorsement of O’Rourke and the reaction it has inspired in fans, “Everybody has an opinion. Everybody has a right to an opinion. So I think I have one, too.”

Nelson said in an earlier public statement that O’Rourke “embodies what is special about Texas.”

“My wife Annie and I have met and spoken with Beto and we share his concern for the direction things are headed. Beto embodies what is special about Texas, an energy and an integrity that is completely genuine,” the singer wrote.

“Everybody has a right to an opinion. So I think I have one, too,” said the singer.

O’Rourke is running against Sen. Ted Cruz.

A Democrat has not been elected to statewide office in Texas since 1994 — so many potential voters likely don’t agree with Nelson’s stated belief that Beto O’Rourke “embodies what is special” about the Lone Star State.
