Joe Scarborough’s comparing President Donald Trump and his policies to 9/11 on the 17th anniversary of the horrendous terrorist attacks earned the MSNBC “Morning Joe” co-host a huge backlash Tuesday on Twitter.

“Joe, you owe an apology to the 3000+ families who lost loved ones on this tragic day. Injecting politics today is disgraceful and only shows how irrelevant and deranged you’ve become,” the president’s son, Donald Trump Jr., tweeted.

Scarborough first published an op-ed in The Washington Post late Monday, titled “Trump is harming the dream of America more than any foreign adversary ever could.”

“Sixteen years of strategic missteps have been followed by the maniacal moves of a man who has savaged America’s vital alliances, provided comfort to hostile foreign powers, attacked our intelligence and military communities, and lent a sympathetic ear to neo-Nazis and white supremacists across the globe,” Scarborough wrote.

“The question for voters this fall is whether their country will move beyond this troubled chapter in history or whether they will continue supporting a politician who has done more damage to the dream of America than any foreign adversary ever could,” Scarborough added.

Scarborough followed up on his op-ed Tuesday with even more explicit remarks.

“If you strip America of its ideas — forget about knocking down buildings in the financial district, forget about running planes into the Pentagon — those are tragedies, but those tragedies bring us closer together,” Scarborough said on “Morning Joe,” adding that Trump “is tearing more at the fabric of America than attacks on the twin towers did. We rebuilt from that. We became stronger because of that. But this seems to me a far graver threat to the idea of America.”

Although anti-Trump Americans applauded Scarborough on social media, his op-ed and his following remarks also caused an outpouring of outrage.

“Joe Scarborough just wrote Trump is a ‘far graver threat’ than 9/11 attackers — who killed almost 3,000 Americans and impacted so many more. He should apologize. This article is NOT okay. #September11th,” tweeted Stephen Rowe, the deputy director of digital training for The Leadership Institute.

“It’s a good thing to keep an open mind, but not so much that your brains fall out. Reckless hyperbole like this, by the way, is one of the reasons Trump won in 2016,” tweeted David Martosko, The Daily Mail’s U.S. political editor.

“Ignore people like this today. Focus on the memories of those who sacrificed themselves to save others. Remember the day,” tweeted Chad Felix Greene, a senior contributor at The Federalist.

“.@JoeNBC has no soul,” tweeted Sebastian Gorka, former deputy assistant to Trump.

“No matter your opinion on who is in the White House, this is grotesque. Stop,” National Rifle Association (NRA) spokeswoman Dana Loesch tweeted.

“This is sick. This is deranged. Joe Scarborough should hang his disturbed head in shame and he should resign from public life forever after this shameful analogy. This coward is an embarrassment to himself, his network, and anyone who claims him,” former U.S. Secret Service agent and current NRATV host Dan Bongino tweeted.

“Sniveling crackpot exploits 9/11 to indulge his Trump Derangement Syndrome,” conservative commentator Michelle Malkin tweeted.

“I can’t believe this hatred for our President‼️ Their hate is what’s dangerous,” Fox News host Judge Jeanine Pirro tweeted.

“Scarborough[‘s] problem is he’s blind with envy towards ⁦@realDonaldTrump⁩ and mesmerized by his blonde girlfriend. Like a hostage. He’d say anything to make her happy. No longer has free will,” conservative audio host Wayne Allyn Root tweeted.
