She’s not doing a whole lot of public service these days, but Clinton sure is busy in front of the camera. The former Democratic presidential candidate made a cameo appearance Thursday night on the premiere episode of the “Murphy Brown” reboot.
In the odd appearance, Clinton appeared as not herself, but a character with her same first name but who spells it with one “l.”
Clinton was applying for a secretary job on the fictional show “Murphy in the Morning.” Lead character Murphy Brown (played by Candice Bergen) interviewed Clinton, and the two dropped plenty of tongue-in-cheek jokes that just weren’t that funny.
“For four years, I was the secretary … of a very large organization,” Clinton responded when asked whether she had experience as a secretary.
She added, “I do have some experience with emails.”
Murphy Brown tells Clinton she needs to think more about the position and that the candidate might be “overqualified.” Clinton leaves a business card that sports the email address “Hillary at you could have had me dot.com.”
The cameo appearance was in no way organic to the show’s story, and it was a pit stop that amounted to little more than a pat on the back for the failed presidential candidate.
What’s even stranger about the appearance is that the reboot of “Murphy Brown” only exists because Donald Trump won the presidency — at least, that’s what Bergen revealed in a recent interview promoting the new iteration of her series.
“Murphy Brown” originally ran for 10 seasons from 1988 to 1998. It follows reporter Murphy Brown, and the original series did include real-life figures playing themselves, including Aretha Franklin and reporter Connie Chung.
“We’ve always tried to blur the lines between fiction and reality, and we were so successful in doing that in the first iteration of this show that the vice president thought Murphy was a real person,” creator and showrunner Diane English previously said at the Television Critics Association press tour panel, where she teased that someone “enormously famous” would appear in the premiere episode of the new season of “Murphy Brown.”
“Murphy Brown” isn’t the only acting gig Clinton has scored since losing the presidency. She will also be appearing on an upcoming episode of “Madame Secretary,” another CBS drama. “Secretary” follows a female secretary of state (played by Téa Leoni), who many have theorized is heavily based on Clinton.
Clinton will appear in the season five premiere episode of the show on October 7.
