The New York Times on Wednesday published an op-ed article by an unnamed senior administration official who called President Donald Trump “erratic.”

It also described a “quiet resistance” of Trump cabinet members who have quietly talked about taking steps to remove him from office.

The first lady weighed in on Thursday, blasting the op-ed and its unnamed author. “Freedom of speech is an important pillar of our nation’s founding principles and a free press is important to our democracy. The press should be fair, unbiased and responsible,” Melania Trump told CNN in a statement on Thursday. “To the writer of the op-ed — you are not protecting this country, you are sabotaging it with your cowardly actions.”

She continued, “Unidentified sources have become the majority of the voices people hear about in today’s news. People with no names are writing our nation’s history. Words are important, and accusations can lead to severe consequences. If a person is bold enough to accuse people of negative actions, they have a responsibility to publicly stand by their words and people have the right to be able to defend themselves.”

Read on for 10 of the outrageous claims this anonymous op-ed writer makes — and why even a cursory examination reveals these claims don’t add up at all.

1.) “President Trump is facing a test to his presidency unlike any faced by a modern American leader.” The op-ed author must not remember that previous presidents faced two world wars, the Cuban missile crisis, numerous devastating natural disasters, and the horrific 9/11 attacks — to name only a few.

2.) “The dilemma — which he does not fully grasp — is that many of the senior officials in his own administration are working diligently from within to frustrate parts of his agenda and his worst inclinations.” It would be hard to make all the policy and economic gains this focused administration has made with these alleged spy games going on, day in and day out.

3.) “We want the administration to succeed and think that many of its policies have already made America safer and more prosperous.” Yes, America is safer and more prosperous. But no, an anonymous op-ed does not lead to success — only division.

4.) “The president continues to act in a manner that is detrimental to the health of our republic.” With a thriving economy, increasing job security, borders being secured, and many other gains, “detrimental” is not the word that comes to mind.

5.) “The root of the problem is the president’s amorality. Anyone who works with him knows he is not moored to any discernible first principles that guide his decision making.” America’s military and first responders are finally getting the attention and support they deserve — and this president has made issues such as respect for the American flag and the national anthem hallmarks of his time in the Oval Office. No principles?

6.) “Although he was elected as a Republican, the president shows little affinity for ideals long espoused by conservatives: free minds, free markets and free people.” With a better-secured border, Americans of all colors are free. This president is crafting fair trade deals that benefit the U.S., and he constantly celebrates the independence and fortitude of Americans often overlooked by others.

7.) “In addition to his mass-marketing of the notion that the press is the ‘enemy of the people,’ President Trump’s impulses are generally anti-trade and anti-democratic.” There isn’t anything more pro-trade than accepting nothing less than fair, multi-nation trade deals — and as a duly elected leader, this president is democracy in action.

8.) “But these successes have come despite — not because of — the president’s leadership style, which is impetuous, adversarial, petty and ineffective.” Donald Trump has his own leadership style, and he can be quick with his temper. The same can be said for many highly effective people.

Trump calls things as he sees them, and he isn’t afraid to call out the mainstream media and aggressive liberals who attempt to thwart his agenda. “Ineffective” is a word that even his foes might hesitate to use.

9.) “In public and in private, President Trump shows a preference for autocrats and dictators, such as President Vladimir Putin of Russia and North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-un, and displays little genuine appreciation for the ties that bind us to allied, like-minded nations.” Making nations accountable for how their actions impact America — the president’s first priority — would be a fairer representation of how Trump treats both allies and enemies of the U.S.

And while former President Barack Obama was lauded for reaching out, even applauded for his “apology tour,” this president rarely receives praise for attempting to work with even the harshest of dictators.

10.) “The bigger concern is not what Mr. Trump has done to the presidency but rather what we as a nation have allowed him to do to us. We have sunk low with him and allowed our discourse to be stripped of civility.” Look no further than the spiteful and ugly actions of those who haven’t given this administration a chance since the day Trump was inaugurated.

The discourse has been in the gutter due to mainstream media bias, elected progressives’ agendas, and everyday liberals’ still grappling with the fact that Trump won the election.

The op-ed ends, “There is a quiet resistance within the administration of people choosing to put country first. But the real difference will be made by everyday citizens rising above politics, reaching across the aisle and resolving to shed the labels in favor of a single one: Americans.”

It would seem that an anonymous missive full of misdirection and mischaracterization, while bereft of any sign of true loyalty, is not the place to begin.
