President Donald Trump is set to unveil a multipronged plan — spearheaded by senior adviser Stephen Miller — designed to reduce citizens’ tax burden by largely limiting current and future immigrants to those who demonstrate financial self-sufficiency, multiple outlets are reporting.

The plan involves both enforcing existing immigration law and adding new rules to the federal register.

Existing law already requires that foreign nationals seeking citizenship “prove that they will not become drains on the American taxpayer,” as Breitbart noted in its piece.

In addition to enforcing laws limiting would-be immigrants to those who are self-sufficient, the plan would also cut off current legal immigrants’ pathway to citizenship if they or their family members have already demonstrated a lack of self-sufficiency.

Legal immigrant residents who have themselves used, or whose family members have used, American welfare programs will face steeper hurdles to obtaining legal citizenship.

The programs include, among others, Obamacare, children’s health insurance program (CHIP), food stamps, the Earned Income Tax Credit, and public housing, according to the Washington Examiner and others.

The plan, massive in scope, would not require congressional approval.

The new rules would come into play via a redefinition of what constitutes “public charge” — a phrase referring to government dependence, as CNN reported; the Clinton administration used the same strategy in the 1990s to the benefit of immigrants.

Households earning up to as much as two and a half times the poverty level could still be rejected for citizenship, NBC News reported.

More than 20 million immigrants could be affected by the proposed change, according to immigration lawyers and public health researchers that outlet cited.

And yes, not surprisingly, many liberal outlets are already attacking the Trump administration for this potential move.

“Stephen Miller and the Trump Administration Set Their Sights on Punishing Legal Immigrants,” reads a headline from GQ, for example.

And an opinion piece in The Washington Post carries this headline: “Trump and Stephen Miller are now targeting legal immigrants. This will get uglier.”
