CNN analyst Jeffrey Toobin (shown above center) claimed on that network on Tuesday that any warning by President Donald Trump about the violent far-Left group known as Antifa is based on Trump’s own “appeal to racism.”

“Let’s be clear also about what’s going on here. The theme here is, ‘I’m Donald Trump and I’ll protect you from the scary black people,'” Toobin said on CNN, as The Daily Wire reported.

“Antifa is widely perceived as an African-American organization, and this is just part of the same story of LeBron James and Don Lemon and Maxine Waters and the NFL players and the UCLA basketball players.”

“This is about black versus white,” Toobin also said.

His comment was reportedly made in response to the president’s warning to evangelical leaders about backlash if Republicans lose the November midterm elections.

The president made the comment in a private conversation with religious leaders, as Newsweek reported; CNN apparently obtained a recording of the conversation.

The president was voicing a concern about Antifa violence.

“This November 6 election is very much a referendum on not only me, it’s a referendum on your religion, it’s a referendum on free speech and the First Amendment. It’s a referendum on so much,” Trump said, according to the recording.

Several Antifa organizations this summer smeared the lawmakers responsible for a bill requiring that they conduct their “protests” while unmasked, including issuing this remark from Antifa USA, an activist group based in Arizona: “I don’t think the #Fascists & their collaborators comprehend the gravity of the situation, our resources, nor dedication to #Antifascism.”

Earlier this month, left-wing protesters targeted conservative activist Candace Owen, and Charlie Kirk, founder of conservative organization Turning Point USA. The group went after them as they attempted to eat breakfast together in Philadelphia.

While many Antifa supporters dress all in black — known as the “black bloc,” as The Daily Wire reported — the group is overwhelmingly made up of young white people, according to CNN’s own reporting.

Toobin’s comments elicited swift reaction on Twitter; he was widely ridiculed on the social media platform.
