Former CIA Director John Brennan’s theatrics before and after President Donald Trump yanked his security clearance make “all of us” in the intelligence community “look like a bunch of partisan hacks,” former FBI official Chris Swecker said Monday night on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle.”
“I mean, what [Brennan’s] doing is irresponsible and selfish because he is identified with the intelligence community, and I was a member of that,” said Swecker, a former assistant director of the FBI’s criminal investigative division.
“And it makes all of us look like a bunch of partisan hacks when [Brennan] goes off, you know, in every direction, spewing all this vitriol,” he added. “It really reflects poorly on the intelligence community. People sit back and say, ‘Well, now we know what he was thinking back when he was the head of the CIA.’ It doesn’t reflect well.”
Brennan (pictured above right), now a national security analyst for NBC and MSNBC, has made no secret of his bitter disdain for Trump since leaving the CIA. The Obama-era director has called Trump a “traitor” and a “tyrant.”
Brennan even claimed in a July 16 tweet that the president’s performance during his controversial press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, Finland, was “nothing short of treasonous.” Treason is punishable by death.
Trump revoked Brennan’s security clearance August 15 after the former CIA director “leveraged his status as a former high-ranking official with access to highly sensitive information to make a series of unfounded and outrageous allegations” about the current administration.
The president maintained that “any benefits that senior officials might glean from consultations with Mr. Brennan are now outweighed by the risks posed by his erratic conduct and behavior.”
“They act like there’s some sort of property right to keep a security clearance post-government work, and there is no such thing,” Swecker said.
Daniel Hoffman, a former CIA chief of station and a Fox News contributor, said Brennan “has made some outrageous claims,” such as insisting Trump’s Helsinki summit with Putin proved he was “guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors.”
Hoffman added: “It’s not just our own citizens who are listening to John Brennan. There are foreign governments and foreign spies stealing secrets on our behalf who are going to believe that John Brennan knows something that maybe we don’t, and their trust in our government is going to be degraded. Our national security, as a result, will be impacted negatively.”
More than 175 former top national security officials rebuked Trump and sided with Brennan by signing a letter Monday claiming the former CIA director deserved to maintain his security clearance.
“Those who signed this letter might question whether they want to be tethered to John Brennan, who’s really kind of the weak link in this chain here,” Hoffman suggested. “He’s not a credible witness.”
But Brennan doubled down on his anti-Trump criticism while denying being a partisan during an interview Sunday on NBC News’ “Meet the Press,” claiming that “many members of the Congress over the years who have security clearances have spoken out rather forcefully against whoever was in the Oval Office if they weren’t from the same political party.”
Brennan also threatened to pursue legal action against Trump after losing his security clearance, vowing, “I’m going to do whatever I can personally to try to prevent these abuses in the future, and if it means going to court, I will do that.”
But Trump mocked Brennan on Twitter Monday and urged him to file the lawsuit.
“I hope John Brennan, the worst CIA Director in our country’s history, brings a lawsuit. It will then be very easy to get all of his records, texts, emails and documents to show not only the poor job he did, but how he was involved with the Mueller Rigged Witch Hunt. He won’t sue!” Trump tweeted.
“Everybody wants to keep their Security Clearance, it’s worth great prestige and big dollars, even board seats, and that is why certain people are coming forward to protect Brennan,” Trump added. “It certainly isn’t because of the good job he did! He is a political ‘hack.'”
