Even after 25 years, “The Sandlot” remains one of the most treasured coming-of-age films of all time.

The 1993 feature followed the story of Scotty Smalls (Tom Guiry), the new kid in town, who ends up befriending a group of local boys — who spend every spare minute they have playing baseball. It’s a great film about friendship, the power of passion, and finding one’s own voice.

The film has only gained fans over the years. It was followed by two lackluster sequels that featured different casts in 2005 and 2007.

Now, 20th Century Fox is in the early development stages of a prequel to the original movie, Deadline is reporting. No solid plot details are known, but the storyline reportedly would directly tie into several key plot points in the original film.

Original writer-director David Mickey Evans is working on the script with Austin Reynolds. While having the original creator involved usually inspires hope, Evans is also responsible for the poorly received “Sandlot 2.”

Hollywood is obviously mining every franchise it can right now in the hope of striking gold, but is a prequel to “The Sandlot” really needed? Dissecting and explaining certain things about the first film in a prequel may work to undo some of that magic of the original flick.

If anything, maybe a sequel would be a better idea. Grab some of the original cast — and follow them as adults as they teach their kids the very same sport that brought them together.
