Dershowitz Won’t ‘Be Shut Down’ or ‘Intimidated’ for Backing Trump

Liberal Harvard professor's defense of president's civil liberties led a woman to want to 'stab me in the heart'

Harvard Law School Professor Emeritus Alan Dershowitz “will not be shut down” and “will not be intimidated” for defending President Donald Trump’s civil liberties, Dershowitz said Friday on Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom.”

“Recently a woman at a [Martha’s Vineyard] party said, if [Dershowitz] were at this party, she would stab [him] in the heart,” Dershowitz said. “This is a radical, leftist woman who will resort to violence because she doesn’t agree with my defense of President Trump’s civil liberties.”

Dershowitz has enraged liberals by defending Trump repeatedly in recent months. The professor warned during an interview on Fox News’ “Fox & Friends” in May, for example, that Democrats and progressives “obviously think” Trump is “the devil” and are trying to “eliminate civil liberties” to impeach him on any grounds — regardless of the outcome of special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe.

Liberals mocked Dershowitz after he revealed in a late June op-ed in The Hill that “some of my old friends on Martha’s Vineyard” are “shunning me and trying to ban me from their social life” because of his defense of Trump’s civil liberties.

“These childish efforts to shun me because I refused to change my position on civil liberties that I have kept for half a century discourages vibrant debate and may dissuade other civil libertarians from applying their neutral principles to a president of whom they disapprove,” Dershowitz wrote.

It’s ironic, Dershowitz noted Friday, that Martha’s Vineyard liberals are ostracizing him because of Trump when he didn’t even vote for Trump in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

“I’m not a Trump supporter politically. I voted for [2016 Democratic presidential nominee] Hillary Clinton,” Dershowitz said. “I’m a supporter of all civil liberties. I would be supporting Hillary Clinton’s civil liberties if she were the president and she were being unfairly attacked.”

Dershowitz also slammed Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) professor Nicholas Negroponte, whom he accused of orchestrating the Martha’s Vineyard shunning.

“The campaign is being led by an MIT professor named Nicholas Negroponte who believes that you should only hear one side of issues, who has come up with a theory that it is boring to listen to both sides, and he would like to have a newspaper that only presents one side of issues so that people could only hear what satisfies their worldview,” Dershowitz said. “And he is trying to bring this brave new world to Martha’s Vineyard.”

“Fortunately, [Negroponte] is failing. The vast majority of the people in the Vineyard, even people who are liberals, are completely supportive of me,” Dershowitz added. “It’s only people on the hard Left.”

“‘Only my point of view should be heard,’ say these people. ‘We don’t want to hear Dershowitz’s point of view, so shut him down,'” Dershowitz paraphrased. “It won’t work. I will not be shut down. I will not be intimidated.”
