Peter Fonda’s new film, “Boundaries,” is not exactly lighting up the box office.

The movie earned just under $30,000 over the weekend in a handful of theaters.

While “Boundaries” is a small release and was never meant to break box-office records, its appeal to the public certainly wasn’t helped by recent headlines surrounding Fonda.

The “Easy Rider” actor earned plenty of controversy recently when he threatened 12-year-old Barron Trump on Twitter.

Fonda, you may recall, recommended Barron — the youngest child of the president — be put in a cage with pedophiles. A closer look at the performer’s Twitter account shows a great deal of misogynistic and hateful rhetoric aimed at conservatives.

“Boundaries” got most of its publicity from the Fonda incident, as it came in the wake of ABC’s firing of Trump-supporting Roseanne Barr from her own show for a tweet that was deemed racist. The consequences for Barr versus Fonda show a clear bias in how right-leaning artists are treated in Hollywood.

In a public statement, Sony condemned Fonda’s threat against Barron Trump but refused to pull “Boundaries” from its release date.

“Peter Fonda’s comments are abhorrent, reckless and dangerous, and we condemn them completely. It is important to note that Mr. Fonda plays a very minor role in the film,” the studio said. “To pull or alter this film at this point would unfairly penalize the filmmaker Shana Feste’s accomplishment, the many actors, crew members and other creative talent that worked hard on the project. We plan to open the film as scheduled this weekend, in a limited release of five theaters.”

Considering the attention the movie has gotten and the small amount it’s earned while in theaters, Sony may be wishing for a rewrite of that statement.
