Before he became the first president of the United States, Gen. George Washington endured personal hardship while leading troops into battle against the British redcoats during the American Revolutionary War. This camp chest, or “canteen,” as it was called in the 18th century, accompanied Washington on his expeditions as an officer and field commander. It contained tents, tables, traveling beds, dining ware, and other equipment.
