As “news couples” go, Tomi Lahren and Kathy Griffin are about as unlikely a pair as ever.

No, the two didn’t engage in a hair-pulling, claw-baring public brawl — or else the footage would have been splashed across every cable news network out there.

It was all a bit more low-key than that. Quietly, the controversial and leftist comedian Kathy Griffin recently showed support for Tomi Lahren.

Ideologically speaking, the two are planets apart — but for the briefest of moments, their orbits crossed paths.

It all started with a drink — specifically, an alcoholic one hurled into the face of conservative commentator Tomi Lahren, who was attending brunch in Minnesota with her parents. It wasn’t water this time (that incident happened the night before).

Think about it for a moment: A person is out in public with her parents on a weekend afternoon, only to be accosted by an angry malcontent whose capacity for argument is apparently limited to tossing libations.

The news got around lightning-fast that Tomi Lahren had been mistreated at the restaurant. She was also subjected to profanity-laced chanting. Classy crowd.

“I’m tough. I can handle it,” Lahren later said on “Fox & Friends.”

Even so, she drew her share of supporters. None other than President Donald Trump publicly backed her.

“Everybody is with Tomi Lahren, a truly outstanding and respected young woman!” Trump tweeted.

The most unexpected show of support, though, came from Trump-basher Kathy Griffin, who is no stranger to ostracism.

“I couldn’t disagree more with [Tomi Lahren], but I don’t think it’s cool to resort to physical actions to make your point,” Griffin wrote on Twitter.

No one is insinuating that these two ladies are “gal pals” and will be going out clubbing together.

“The First Amendment is a beautiful thing — use it,” she added.

It was a hedged comment and small token of support; no one is insinuating that these two ladies are “gal pals” and will be going out clubbing together. But it was an attempt on Griffin’s part — at least it appears that way on the surface — to stick up for a political opponent’s right to speak her mind without being physically intimidated.

The comment also carries baggage.

Griffin herself, of course, received a rude awakening not that long ago that there were limits to the public’s tolerance for shocking speech. Her crude Trump-beheading depiction came across more as incendiary than “artistic” to most sensible Americans, and her terrible lack of judgment — and her confused comments long afterward — will not soon be forgotten by most.
