President Donald Trump has his share of Hollywood critics, but Robert De Niro seems an especially fierce and aggressive one.
The once-great actor — and current flop artist — has lately had nothing but vile things to say about the sitting president. And he recently doubled down by saying the commander-in-chief was not welcome at his Nobu chain of restaurants.
“I don’t care what he likes. If he walked into a restaurant I was in — I’d walk out,” the 74-year-old actor told the Daily Mail at the opening in Spain of a new Nobu spot, which serves Japanese-inspired cuisine. De Niro added he would “never let Trump into any of the Nobu restaurants.”
Nobu’s co-founder, chef Nobu Matsuhisa, was a little more reasonable. He even said he’d like to cook for both De Niro and Trump.
“It’s my dream for Trump to sit next to Bob. To make them sushi!” he said.
De Niro’s threat ended up empty, anyway. His rep later clarified to The Hollywood Reporter, “Bob has not banned anyone from dining at Nobu.”
De Niro’s issues with the president seem to run far deeper than politics; they seem personal. He previously said he’d like to punch Trump in the face and even called the president a “f***ing fool.”
No matter what has inspired De Niro’s red-hot hatred, perhaps he should focus a little bit more of his attention on acting — rather than on the president. Maybe then he could go back to making relevant films again that people actually want to see.
