A routine traffic stop turned into another case of playing victim when Rev. Jarrod Moultrie was pulled over for failing to use his turn signal.

The president of the local chapter of the NAACP in South Carolina took to social media to detail an allegedly harrowing incident in which he claims interaction with a police officer led him to believe he was being racially profiled.

According to Moultrie’s now-deleted Facebook post, he was pulled over and questioned because he was black and driving a Mercedes-Benz in a nice neighborhood.

The narrative that “police officers are pulling over innocent black men to harass them” is getting a little stale. Jarrod Moultrie seemed to realize this when he took to social media to post his story.

The only problem is that his was a fabricated account.

Bodycam footage of the interaction was released, showing a polar opposite version of events. During the course of the traffic stop, not once did the police officer disrespect Moultrie. In fact, he calmly explained why he pulled him over and followed police protocol by running his license and registration.

According to Moultrie’s Facebook post, the police officer demanded to know whose car he was driving, where he worked, and what he was doing in the neighborhood. He also claimed the officer asked if there were any drugs in the vehicle. The bodycam footage shows that no such queries were made.

The police officer inquired about Moultrie’s registration, which didn’t match the vehicle he was driving. Upon hearing Moultrie’s explanation, the officer reminded him to ensure it gets fixed and to drive safely.

That is literally the extent of what happened. There isn’t anything in the video that would make me question the officer’s intentions.

He spoke in a respectful tone throughout the entire exchange.

Of course, the truth isn’t convenient for the scandalous narrative that the NAACP would like to see in the spotlight. In fact, the police officer specifically stated why Moultrie was pulled over. He identified himself and spoke professionally. Rather than move on realizing that not all police purportedly want to gun down unarmed black men, Moultrie decided to stoke the flames with his false account.

Perhaps the most disturbing aspect is the fact that Jarrod Moultrie is a pastor. This is someone charged with giving spiritual guidance and taking on a leadership role within his community.

While it’s important to address the racial divide in the United States, Jarrod Moultrie decided it was more important to lie. As a representative of an organization that’s supposed to stand up for civil rights, Moultrie should step down immediately from any association with the NAACP. Lying to the public about something as serious as being racially profiled is disgraceful.

Those who make false accusations should be brought to account.

Sadly, Moultrie also put the police officer’s career at risk with his blatantly false account of what happened. It’s getting to the point where police officers face scrutiny over enforcing the law across the board. There shouldn’t be a separate set of standards because of skin color.

Likewise, those who make false accusations should be brought to account.
