At a White House celebration for military mothers and spouses on Wednesday, President Donald Trump signed a new executive order to increase military spouse hiring across the federal government as part of the administration’s commitment to supporting military families.

The first lady, also present at the ceremony, extended her own wishes to military spouses around the nation, as well as to those assembled.

“I’m honored to host everyone at the White House to celebrate you mothers,” said Melania Trump, smiling at the military spouses around her. “Mother’s Day, which is this Sunday, is celebrated just one time per year.” She added, “I don’t know about all of you, but I think mothers should be celebrated each and every day.”

Military Spouse Appreciation Day is celebrated each year on the Friday before Mother’s Day. It’s a chance to honor the contributions and sacrifices made by the military spouses, whose commitment to family and country play a role in keeping this country safe.

The first lady and the president are the parents of their son, Barron, 12 — and certainly understand the joys, frustrations, and satisfaction of the parenting role.

“As a mother myself, I know what goes into raising a child,” added Mrs. Trump. “It takes an incredible amount of strength, a lot of time, a generous amount of patience, and all of your love. As moms, we are so incredibly privileged to be able to bring children into this world, and be part of helping them grow into adults. Children bring us an endless amount of both joy and fear. They fill us with pride through their triumphs, and they love us in a manner that only other mothers can understand.”

The first lady’s commitment to children is already well-established through her new “Be Best” family initiative — something that’s, sadly, been mocked by many members of the mainstream media — but she again expressed her thoughts on the parent-child connection.

“Because of the powerful bond between a mother and a child, when they feel emotions, so do we. Whether they are happy or nervous, sad or excited, we feel those things with them,” the first lady noted. “I think it is one of the most powerful and beautiful parts of motherhood.”

She added, “Today, I want to take this opportunity to let you all know that as mothers and co-members of the military community, you deserve recognition for not only your love for your children, but for the dedication and sacrifice you make on behalf of our country each and every day.”

It is a meaningful sacrifice that most military families gladly make.

Interestingly, the vast majority of military families, veterans and troops — about 77 percent — said in a recent survey they would “overwhelmingly” recommend a military career to someone they care about, according to Military.com. The respondents answered that way even though the question was asked at the very end of the survey, which covered many aspects of military life, not all of them pleasant.

“I know I speak on behalf of my husband, the vice president, and Mrs. Pence, when I tell you how much this administration supports those who serve, which includes not only those who are enlisted, but their families, too,” Mrs. Trump continued.

“Whether you are enlisted, actively serving, or if you have a child in our military, you are such a special part of this country, for all that you give,” she said. “I hope you enjoy this performance by the United States Army Chorus, and we are so honored to have you here today.”

The first lady ended by thanking the second lady, Karen Pence; counselor to the president Kellyanne Conway; and her stepdaughter and special adviser to the president, Ivanka Trump, for their work on the executive order in support of military families. “Because of your commitment to the military,” she said, “there will be more opportunities for military spouses who are looking for jobs within the federal government. Thank you, ladies, for your hard work on this important topic.”

The president then signed the executive order, which will add new accountability measures to hiring opportunities for military spouses in the public sector. It will also help the federal government to better track its own success at hiring spouses.
