As the American poet Emily Dickinson once said, “The heart wants what it wants.”

Sometimes this means love that includes the responsible use of firearms — which is why Laura Clark, who is based in Texas, launched ProGunDating.com. It’s a new dating site for Americans who are seeking not only romance but others who share a love of the Second Amendment.

“The website aims to connect like-minded patriotic Americans who cherish and believe in our constitutional right to bear arms,” explains a press release from the site.

The idea for the ProGunDating.com emerged from a real-world need.

“I was inspired to take ProGunDating.com live in the wake of a renewed attack on the rights of law-abiding gun owners,” Clark, the CEO of the new site, told LifeZette in an email. “I was equally motivated to create this space, as I’ve had less than desirable experiences with anti-gun people on several other dating platforms.”

Clark says she had also grown tired of being derided for a profile picture depicting her posing with a firearm at a local shooting range.

So instead of continuing to make even more excuses for not finding love — or being forced to hide her personal beliefs — Clark decided it was time for pro-gun folks to have a dating site of their own.

She decided to provide a place where singles could shoot straight from the hip about themselves — and the rest is history.

Clark spent months developing the site, which functions exactly like other top-tier dating sites, she explained. “Create an account, find local and single supporters of the Second Amendment, and begin communicating with them. It’s a very simple, intuitive platform.”

“Pro-gun Americans are passionate about the Second Amendment and what it means to this country. Being with someone who shares those beliefs is crucial for a relationship to succeed,” she said.

For some, the new dating site couldn’t come soon enough — especially in the wake of a blistering New York Times op-ed by John Paul Stevens, a retired associate justice of the United States Supreme Court, wherein he advocated for the complete repeal of the Second Amendment to the Constitution.

Stevens’ op-ed was a show of solidarity with participants of last month’s March for Our Lives, in the wake of the heinous — and overly politicized — Parkland shooting tragedy.

“Rarely in my lifetime have I seen the type of civic engagement schoolchildren and their supporters demonstrated in Washington and other major cities throughout the country this past Saturday,” wrote Stevens.

“These demonstrations demand our respect. They reveal the broad public support for legislation to minimize the risk of mass killings of schoolchildren and others in our society,” he also wrote.

Clark quickly holsters that idea.

“Blaming the Parkland shooting on the Second Amendment is a complete farce,” she told LifeZette. “There are 300 million guns in the United States. If gun rights were actually a problem, tens of thousands would be dead on the streets each and every day. The Tide Pod eaters need to stop ignorantly marching for gun control and start marching up to those who are outcast at schools and in society.”
