An associate professor of English at Fresno State University, Randa Jarrar, earned herself a fair amount of negative attention when she took to Twitter for the wrong reasons an hour after a beloved former first lady’s death.

Jarrar tweeted that the recently deceased Barbara Bush was an “amazing racist” and someone who raised a “war criminal.”

She followed up with this priceless comment: “I’m happy the witch is dead. Can’t wait for the rest of her family to fall to their demise the way 1.5 million iraqis have.”

Yet even that jaw-dropping statement was not the pinnacle of Jarrar’s ignorance. She followed up those comments with: “I work as a tenured professor. I make 100k a year doing that. I will never be fired. I will always have people wanting to hear what I have to say.”

Where does one even begin with a statement like that?

Even public figures who openly advocate for free speech have hit Jarrar hard for her statements.

Comedian Jay Mohr was one person to call her out on social media. He even suggested she be fired. Mohr directed his tweet at Fresno State University President Joseph Castro.

“COWARD,” he wrote. “I’m a comedian, huge free speech advocate. Randa Jarrar should be fired 4 her sheer arrogance. A garbage person that cannot possibly be shielded through your terrible +weak PC statement today. Protecting her hate isn’t why you make 300k a year.”

Castro put out a statement saying the school disagreed with Jarrar’s opinions, but stood by her right to say them.

Of course Jarrar has the right to her despicable opinions. What’s concerning is that she’s paid by a school to teach impressionable minds. Not only do her opinions seem extremist, but her defense of herself and her tenured position shows an isolated and mentally limited person who has no business teaching young people — or anyone, for that matter.

Mohr is right to call out the university president as he did. He cannot allow a teacher who works for him or the school to use her “tenure” and position to defend her awful and ignorant opinions.
