This Is What Melania Trump Gave Michelle Obama on Inauguration Day

A Tiffany & Company box passed between the two first ladies — and no one knew the contents until now

One of the odder mysteries attached to Donald Trump’s Inauguration Day last year had to do with the contents of a box Melania Trump gave to a befuddled Michelle Obama — as the Obamas greeted the Trumps at the White House.

Michelle Obama was clearly surprised by the gift and unsure of what to do with it after she received it.

In a recent interview with Ellen DeGeneres, the former first lady finally ended the mystery and revealed what was in the box.

“It was a lovely frame,” said Mrs. Obama of the Tiffany & Company box from Melania Trump.

Obama also revealed in her interview why she looked so surprised and confused for the cameras after she accepted the gift. “I mean, this is like a state visit, so they tell you that you’re going to do this, they’re going to stand here,” she explained. “Never before do you get this gift, so I’m sort of like, ‘O.K.'”

The Obamas were supposed to take a photo with the Trumps, but Michelle Obama did not want to put the gift on the ground before taking the picture. She was unsure what to do with it — until her husband took the gift inside the White House.

A genuine moment actually seemed to have occurred here — between two people who disagree on so much.

At a time filled with so much polarization and blame-game politics on both sides of the aisle, a genuine moment actually seemed to have occurred here — between two people who disagree on so much.

Even amid the endless protocols that were part of that day and the cultural division that rages on even now, first lady Melania Trump went out of her way to offer a gift to the outgoing president and the first lady. If only there were more moments like this in politics.
