Americans reported substantially higher levels of satisfaction with the country’s military, security from terrorism, and the state of the economy under President Donald Trump than they felt under former President Barack Obama a year ago, according to a Gallup poll released Monday.

Roughly 78 percent of Americans felt satisfied with the military’s strength and preparedness, up 12 points from the 66 percent who felt the same this time last year, according to Gallup’s Mood of the Nation survey.

When it comes to preventing terrorism, 58 percent of Americans feel optimistic about national security, up 13 points from last year’s 50 percent. And 58 percent of Americans are satisfied with the state of the nation’s economy, up 12 points from last year’s 46 percent.

“Increased satisfaction with the economy is likely related to consistent reports of improved economic indicators over the past year, including employment, GDP growth, consumer spending and the stock market,” Gallup noted.

Trump himself touted the state of the economy in a tweet on Sunday, saying “our economy is better than it has been in many decades. Businesses are coming back to America like never before. Chrysler, as an example, is leaving Mexico and coming back to the USA. Unemployment is nearing record lows. We are on the right track!”

“Perhaps related to the shift from a Democratic to a Republican president, most of the changes in satisfaction reflect the issues perceived as strengths and weaknesses for each party,” Gallup reported. “Americans typically credit Republicans with doing a better job on national security and defense, while they rate Democrats better on handling the environment and health care.”

On the issue of quality medical care in the nation, Americans reported a 2 percent decrease in satisfaction from 52 percent to 50 percent. Other decreases in satisfaction included an 8 percent drop regarding the availability of affordable health care and a 7 percent drop when it comes to both the environment and the “role the U.S. plays in world affairs.”

One surprising increase of satisfaction from last year to this year pertains to how satisfied Americans are with the “state of race relations.”

While 22 percent of Americans were satisfied with it last year, 29 percent said they are satisfied now.

The Gallup results showing Americans’ increased levels of satisfaction with economic and national security issues were published the day before Trump is set to deliver his first State of the Union address.
