Trump on CNN’s Decision to Boycott the White House Christmas Party — Great!

The president ripped the network for its 'fake news' after it announced its decision not to go to the event this year

President Donald Trump responded Wednesday to CNN’s Tuesday announcement that it would be boycotting the White House Christmas Party, saying it was “great” news because the network promotes “fake news” anyway.

CNN has found itself the target of many of Trump’s social media jabs. The president directed his ire at the network on Twitter over the past several days, culminating with a Tuesday tweet claiming that CNN is one of “the most dishonest, corrupt and/or distorted” networks and could win the “FAKE NEWS TROPHY” of the year.

Also on Tuesday, a CNN spokesman announced the network would be boycotting the White House Christmas Party taking place Friday at 2 p.m.

“In light of the President’s continued attacks on freedom of the press and CNN, we do not feel it is appropriate to celebrate with him as his invited guests,” the spokesperson said. “We will send a White House reporting team to the event and report on it if news warrants.”

On Wednesday, the president responded to a tweet from White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders in which she reacted to CNN’s boycott, writing, “Christmas comes early! Finally, good news from @CNN.”

“Great, and we should boycott Fake News CNN. Dealing with them is a total waste of time!” Trump responded on Twitter.

Although not mentioned in its Tuesday announcement, CNN took particular issue with a Saturday tweet from Trump in which the president ripped the network and its international news branch for “represent[ing] our Nation to the WORLD very poorly.”

“@FoxNews is MUCH more important in the United States than CNN, but outside of the U.S., CNN International is still a major source of (Fake) news, and they represent our Nation to the WORLD very poorly,” Trump had tweeted. “The outside world does not see the truth from them!”

Other CNN hosts ran segments highlighting the president’s tweet and had commentators weigh in, proclaiming that the president’s outrage at “fake news” from CNN represented an “assault” on journalism.

“Forget that CNN is included in it, because that’s not necessarily what’s important here,” CNN anchor John Berman said Monday. “What’s important here is this is an assault on free speech — this is an assault on journalism. Any journalism that [Trump] doesn’t like.”

CNN host Brian Stelter said Sunday on “Reliable Sources” that the president’s tweet “reads like an invitation to undemocratic regimes around the world to harass CNN journalists with the blessing of the U.S. president. Is this presidential? No. Is this petty? Definitely.”
