Laura Ingraham: ‘Amusing’ to See NYT Worry About Cost of Tax Cuts

LifeZette Editor-in-Chief Laura Ingraham blasted The New York Times on Tuesday for a Page One story asking how the proposed tax cuts will be paid for, saying the paper never expressed concern about how to pay for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, or how to pay for the government bailouts — and only seems concerned when GOP politicians “want to return money to the American people.”

“You know what I find so amusing? Today on the front page of The New York Times there’s this long article about how Donald Trump is making it more difficult to pass tax reform because he’ll put out little data points or tweet something about like 401(k) — he doesn’t want people’s 401(k) contributions to be capped,” Ingraham said in an interview on “Fox & Friends.”

“And The New York Times writes this entire piece about, ‘Well, how are we going to pay for it? How are we going to pay for this tax cut?” And this long-winded piece about how Trump is throwing the whole thing into chaos,” she added.

But The Times had no compunctions when Obama came to Congress or when the Democrats pushed for expensive and far-reaching programs and pieces of legislation, Ingraham said.

“And I look back and I think, ‘Huh. I don’t recall those types of articles about the stimulus one and two. How are we going to pay for it? Certainly not about Iraq or Afghanistan trillions of dollars later. We didn’t really talk about that when we talked about [the Troubled Asset Relief Program]. How are we going to pay for it? How are we going to pay for illegal aliens coming across the border?'” she said.

LifeZette’s editor-in-chief said that Trump’s tax overhaul plan — as well as any of Congress’ other initiatives — requires a growing economy in order to sustain “the type of spending, frankly, that we’ve gotten used to.” In addition, Ingraham suggested that Congress consider cutting back on its discretionary spending as well.

“But the idea that it’s Trump’s fault — these people have been spending us into oblivion for the past three-plus decades, and that ain’t Donald Trump’s fault, I can tell you that right now,” she said. “That’s just ridiculous.”

The Times, said Ingraham, “never” talked about the cost of a bill when it was “one of their pet projects or one of their initiatives.”

“It’s only when you want to return money to the American people. By the way, it’s their money. So it’s their money. Let’s give it back to them,” she said. “Let’s get more growth in the system. And that will do — that will go a long way toward economic renewal for this country.”

Ingraham also highlighted a Monday MSNBC report on Trump’s proposed border wall — a signature campaign promise that Democrats and some Republicans reject the very notion of — that took a different turn when illegal immigrants jumped the existing border fence right before their very eyes.

“I found that to be so great on so many levels. Number one, MSNBC actually kind of stumbled into reporting on the borders. So that’s good,” she said. “On the other hand, of course, we know that we’re going to have to do more than have a 10-foot fence on the border.”

“We’re going to have to have a real border wall — not a virtual wall, but a real border wall in most of the area where we’re separated from Mexico. And we’re going to have to have a huge uptick in the number of border agents. That has to happen,” Ingraham added.<

The MSNBC clip, she said, “proves that Donald Trump was 100 percent right” in making immigration enforcement a “seminal issue” during his 2016 president campaign.

“It’s great — [MSNBC] kind of stumbled into reporting on it, and that’s a good thing,” Ingraham said. “Now [Trump] has to ensure — and Congress has to ensure — that that promise is fulfilled. That wall has got to be built, and we have to enforce our border for a variety of reasons. Most Americans understand that.”
