Trump Rips ‘Totally Inept’ NYT Over Report Pence Readying for 2020

President says delivery on promises has brought 'base even closer together' in tweet storm slamming 'fake news media'

President Donald Trump lashed out at the “failing” and “totally inept” New York Times and targeted the “fake news” pushed on CNN, ABC News, NBC News, CBS News, and The Washington Post in a lengthy Twitter tirade Monday morning.

“The failing @nytimes, which has made every wrong prediction about me including my big election win (apologized), is totally inept!” Trump began.

The slam followed a Sunday-night tweet in which Trump accused “The Fake News” of refusing “to report the success of the first 6 months” of his administration.

The president’s frustration with the press came after The Times published an article over the weekend alleging that Vice President Mike Pence is anticipating Trump’s downfall and preparing for a potential 2020 presidential bid. Pence refuted The Times’ claims, blasted the story as “disgraceful and offensive,” and said the allegations were “categorically false and represent just the latest attempt by the media to divide this administration.”

The president suggested in tweets Monday that his political position is stronger than ever.

“Hard to believe that with 24/7 #Fake News on CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, NYTIMES & WAPO, the Trump base is getting stronger!”

The president issued three other tweets insisting his base is encouraged by the actions he has taken so far in office and accusing the press of ignoring positive news.

“The Trump base is far bigger & stronger than ever before (despite some phony Fake News polling),” Trump tweeted. “Look at rallies in Penn, Iowa, Ohio … and West Virginia. The fact is the Fake News Russian collusion story, record Stock Market, border security, military strength, jobs … Supreme Court pick, economic enthusiasm, deregulation & so much more have driven the Trump base even closer together. Will never change!”

The president also turned aside from criticizing the media to blast Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) following his appearance Monday on CNN’s “New Day.” During his segment, Blumenthal defended the press and the “independent judiciary” as “heroes.” Blumenthal also criticized Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ Friday press conference in which he warned the media the Department of Justice would be reviewing its policy on subpoenas for reporters as part of its crackdown on illegal leaking.

The senator also touched on the ongoing probe into Russia’s interference in the 2016 U.S. elections and any collusion that may have occurred between Russia and the Trump campaign.

“Interesting to watch Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut talking about hoax Russian collusion when he was a phony Vietnam con artist!” Trump tweeted. “Never in U.S.history has anyone lied or defrauded voters like Senator Richard Blumenthal. He told stories about his Vietnam battles and … conquests, how brave he was, and it was all a lie. He cried like a baby and begged for forgiveness like a child. Now he judges collusion?

Blumenthal received intense criticism when he falsely claimed during his 2010 Senate campaign that he “served in Vietnam” during the Vietnam War. Forced to backpedal, Blumenthal insisted he meant to say that he served as a Marine during the Vietnam War, though not in the country itself.
