For a posh British club that focused on croquet when it first opened, the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club has grown quite a bit in size and stature since its inception in 1868.

It is now better known for hosting one of the most prestigious tennis tournaments in the world: The Championships, Wimbledon. Known to most people as simply “Wimbledon,” it’s a lot more than just a bunch of athletes hitting a ball back and forth across a net.

Wimbledon is one of the most popular sporting events in the world, yet there are still many Americans who know little or nothing about it — although they might have heard on the news Wednesday that fellow American Sam Querrey, 29, just beat defending champ Andy Murray, 30, in a stunning upset, 3-6, 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 6-1, 6-1.

Querrey, the 24th seed, has become the first American man to reach a Grand Slam semi-final since Andy Roddick did so at Wimbledon in 2009. (Murray has been struggling with a hip issue.)
