Visiting the career services center is always a good idea. It’s never too early to begin looking for the perfect summer internship, and these college centers provide terrific resources and services. Students can receive one-on-one assistance in writing effective resumes, interviewing, and using extensive internship databases. Most centers also host several on-campus interview programs in which scores of alumni return to hire. The career services center strengthens students’ confidence and prepares them for the working world.

3.) They need to be resilient. Freshmen may experience an unprecedented level of stress. Many students are unable to deal with the fierce competition because they were raised by helicopter parents.

As a result, these students have not been given the opportunity to experience failure and realize they can survive it. When freshmen hit a speed bump in a class, they may obsess over a low test grade and become unable to redirect their focus to the next exam. For students who lack the skills to do so, they need to take advantage of the college’s free counseling services to develop strategies to cope with stress.

There, students are provided emotional support so they can develop strategies to effectively manage their anxiety.

As noted by the American Psychological Association, “Resilience is not a trait that people either have or do not have. It involves behaviors, thoughts, and actions that can be learned and developed in anyone.”

Once students develop the skill set to deal with minor disappointments, they are able to bounce back from poor grades and romantic break-ups. These students become less afraid of failure, begin to take more intellectual risks — and embrace their college experience.
