In its most recent season, “SNL” showed a rather stunning obsession with President Donald Trump. Actor Alec Baldwin did his impersonation of the president on a near-weekly basis — and in each new episode the show displayed blatantly partisan politics. This, of course, came right after the show turned a blind eye for eight years toward just about every flub and empty promise made by the Barack Obama administration. So to say the satire of “SNL” was one-sided this year is being far too kind.

It paid off for many, however. as Baldwin — after a series of public controversies tarnished his name — became beloved again by the mainstream media. The series also posted its best ratings in years; riding Trump’s coattails was clearly good for business.

Now, award voters are giving the show an extra pat on the back for displaying and maintaining Hollywood’s liberal bias on TV every Saturday night.

“SNL” earned a whopping 22 Emmy nominations Thursday morning. It tied the HBO drama “Westworld” for the most 2017 nods. It is also now the most nominated series of all time, with over 231 nods over the course of its run, which began in 1975.

Among the 2017 nominations, Baldwin was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, and cast members Kate McKinnon, Vanessa Beyer, and Leslie Jones were all nominated for Best Actress in a Comedy Series.

Other shows to be nominated included HBO’s “Veep,” with 17 nominations and Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” with 11 noms.

Sure, it was a bit awkward for “SNL” to call itself “satire” when its cast members sang out-and-out thank-you songs to Obama that sounded like they belonged in North Korea; and it was tiresome for them to hit the same points about Trump and his administration week after week after week. But it was clear the folks behind the show simply didn’t care.

And just in case you’re wondering how political the Emmy Awards, this September 17, will get this year: Not only will “SNL” be the darling of the night, but anti-Trumper Stephen Colbert will be hosting.
