Prayer’s healing power has helped House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) on his path to recovery after a lone shooter went on a rampage last month at a Virginia baseball field, striking the Louisiana congressman and several others.

“As a family of faith, the Scalise family believes in the power of prayer, and have been able to stay in good spirits during this most difficult time from the outpouring of prayers they have received,” Lauren Fine, the majority whip’s press secretary, told LifeZette in an emailed message. “They are eternally grateful and humbled by the support they have been given from folks across the country.”

Doctors at MedStar Washington Hospital Center discharged the congressman on July 25. Scalise, 51, went through many rounds of surgeries and operations. The congressman has “made excellent progress in his recovery from a life-threatening gunshot wound six weeks ago,” according to a statement from the hospital. He now begins “a period of intensive inpatient rehabilitation.”

On Thursday, President Donald Trump awarded the Public Safety Medal of Valor to the first responders at the scene of the shooting. He honored two Capitol Police special agents and three Alexandria police officers, calling these brave individuals “American heroes.”

“We’re praying for [Scalise]. We’re pulling for him, and we are sending his family our support and our love,” Trump said at the ceremony Thursday. Vice President Mike Pence said Thursday that Scalise’s recovery is “an answer to prayer.”

“He [Scalise] is in good spirits and is looking forward to his return to work once he completes rehabilitation,” the hospital said. “He and his family are grateful for the care he received from the trauma team as well as the other doctors, nurses, and staff of MedStar Washington Hospital Center. The family also appreciates the outpouring of prayers and support during this time.”

On June 14 in Alexandria, Virginia, during the Republican team’s morning practice for an annual congressional baseball game for charity, a gunman opened fire on a field. Scalise, two Capitol police officers, a congressional staffer and a Tyson’s food lobbyist were among the wounded.

American rallied together in prayer for the wounded.

“We are all horrified by this dreadful attack on our friends and colleagues, and those who serve and protect this Capitol. We are all praying for those who were attacked and their families,” House Speaker Paul Ryan said in a floor statement June 14.

“My colleagues, there are many memories from this day we will want to forget, and many images we will not want to see again,” Ryan said. “But there is one image in particular that this House should keep. And that is a photo I saw of our Democratic colleagues gathered in prayer [the] morning after hearing the news.”

Scalise’s colleagues also said a prayer before the start of the June 16 Congressional Baseball Game. And the entire stadium of onlookers stood for a moment of silence. (click on page 2 for the rest of the story) [lz_pagination]
