To say that Ava DuVernay’s adaptation of the classic book has been long awaited would be an understatement: The book won a Newberry Medal in 1963.

The children’s science fiction tale involves the adventures of siblings Meg and Charles Wallace. They travel through space in search of their scientist father — who disappeared while at work on a project for the government. “Through sharing this experience, the reader realizes the power of freedom over censorship, that a man’s weaknesses may become his strength, and the love may be stronger than all fears,” as the American Library Association noted of the book.

The movie opens in U.S. theaters on March 9, 2018.

Screenwriter Jennifer Lee is known for her production work in “Frozen.”

Interesting note: When L’Engle finished writing her book in early 1960, it was rejected by at least 26 publishers. As L’Engle herself explained it later, both in books and in interviews: It was “too different,” it dealt “overtly with the problem of evil, it was really difficult for children, and was it a children’s or an adults’ book, anyhow?”
